YEAH North Shore!
I'm hoping this will provide you all with the lock down needed to prohibit the development.
It's interesting how in land planning and reports, golf courses are both listed as "green" areas and "build able areas"... so as long as it meets State requirements at the moment for allowing building in other areas its safe, once it becomes more profitable, it also can be sold for development. Wonder if that will be the future of Chambers Creek once it becomes profitable to sell to developers......
Country Aire Mobile Home Park needs to start asking the County Council to follow Sonomish (sp) County Councils recent proposal to put a halt on planned closure of one of their mobile home parks for development after it was sold. Guess the Council there is rethinking its zoning changes that permitted another loss of mobile home park property in order to follow pending legislation of mobile home park community protection.

Tennis — Australian Open Time

Its time for the 2008 Australian Open Tennis Championships.
What this means is that serious tennis is about to start for 2008. After all, if Roger Federer can continue to play otherwordly tennis at the Australian Open, he can climb a little closer to the all-time record of 14 slams held by Pete Sampras.
This years tourney will feature a new court surface. For the past 20 years the tennis at the Aussie Open has been played on a surface called Rebound Ace.
Rebound Ace has not been a popular surface for a number of reasons. First of all, players have complained that the surface gets sticky when it gets hot (and it gets very hot at the Australian Tennis Open Championships) and players say that there is a real risk of suffering ankle sprains on the synthetic surface.
Secondly, the top Australian Tennis player Lleyton Hewitt has complained bitterly over the years that Rebound Ace is too slow and doesnt give him a good chance to compete for the championship. Note that the concept of a national tennis organization trying to use a surface to favor homegrown players isnt so foreign. Its commonly believed that the US Open surface is kept very fast to favor hard-hitting Americans who grew up on the fast hard courts of California and Florida.
So, this year a faster synthetic surface called Plexicushion is being rolled out.
If youre watching the tennis at the Australian Open on TV this year, the most obvious change that youll notice is the color of the new Plexicushion surface.
So, the let the games begin and lets see what the tennis looks like.

First off, Saturday was my best sales day yet beating my previous record by about $40. I almost hit $600 in fact I would have but Michelle decided to buy a set of cards after I closed the register for the day so it counts towards Sundays sales instead. So, technically I did beat it.
We played a ring game tonight at the store and I bought in with $40 and left with $106.50. I did a really good job. There was this one guy who was just taking everyones money left and right seriously, he bought in with $50 and left with over $300. I was the only one who could outplay him. I bluffed him off a few pots (more than he knows about hehe) and I got him to pay me off when I did have the winning hand. I mostly sat quiet and didnt get into any hands with mediocre starts unless I was in good position and the situation was right, and I usually made good money on the pots I did play. Michelle and Daniel told me that Im really hard to read which is obviously a good thing. I am very conscious of trying not to give off tells but Alex, who totally kicks ass at reading people, can usually still figure me out, so I know I still have some work to do.
So, I unexpectedly have tomorrow off because Alexs plan for switching his schedule didnt go the way he planned it to. Its still going to happen, though. I have Friday off which Im using to get my cars maintenance done, which is cool.
It would be nice to keep doing reasonably well in poker so I can afford to get decent lunches a couple times a week and not eat ramen every day. But, the store is picking up still my newspaper ads are starting to trickle people in, and I ended up with 11 people on short notice to play tonight, so I think my Saturday stuff is going to work out well, too. And last, but not least, I got my last paycheck for my old job with no funny business from them so I have made a clean break from that place.
Anyway, Im probably going to get a head start on my sleeping for the day, so peace out.

Poker Diversification: Bankroll Management

  • Apr. 7th, 2008 at 2:26 AM

Poker shares one very important aspect to any kind of investment, and that is no matter how good you may be, you must prepare yourself for unlucky events. A good investment banker will not put his enPoker shares one very important aspect to any kind of investment, and that is no matter how good you may be, you must prepare yourself for unlucky events. A good investment banker will not put his entire line of credit on one company or industry, and conversely a good poker player will not put his entire bankroll into a single game or on a single hand.
To illustrate this example I will bring up a wonderful movie, Rounders, arguably the first great movie about poker. The constant heads up battles between the main character and Teddy KGB shows us perfectly that if not managed well, your entire bankroll can disappear in a matter of seconds.
For those who did not see the movie, the movies main character, Mike is shown in a heads up game with Teddy KGB an underground poker room owner. Mike has risked his entire bankroll on this game and a well played hand by Teddy KGB catches Mike completely off guard and he ends up losing his entire bankroll in a single hand. Later in the movie Mike is shown again in consecutive back to back heads up matches with KGB and ends up winning back his money and then some.
What must be learned from this is that no matter how good you may be at playing poker, you will lose on occasion to players worse than yourself. For example if I were to play a heads up match with Phil Hellmuth, I may still have a 30% chance of winning, even though I may be a worse player then him. Thus if we play 100 heads up matches I will probably win 25 to 35 games and he will win 75 to 65 matches. This means that he must have a sufficient bankroll size in relation to the amount of money he has risked in this match so that his risk of losing all his money is reduced to near nothing.
Rounders is a classic example of short term poker meets with long term poker. If you play with your entire bankroll every time you sit down at a poker table, then you will go broke eventually. Mike has played great poker from start to end, but his swings from good to poor bankroll strategy meant that he went from a nice sized bankroll, to being in debt, and back again to having a nice sized bankroll.

So now that we know how important bankroll management is, how exactly should we manage our bankroll?
Well it takes discipline and often just a basic strategy, and I will lay it out plainly here. First I will present 3 levels of riskiness when determining your bankroll strategy and apply them to all forms of poker. The variations exist because some types of poker inherently have higher levels of variance (variance: the difference between winning sessions and losing sessions).

3 different levels of riskiness:
Gambler: You play mainly for fun, but you have fun when you win, and losing your bankroll isnt going to be a huge deal as its money well spent.
Conservative: You play for fun, but you are very determined to build a bankroll as high as possible without ever putting anymore money into poker.
Ultra-Conservative: You may play for a living, or you are a beginner poker player, thus variance will inherently be larger because you have not experienced enough decisions to always make the right decision.

Basic terminology used when describing your bankroll strategy:
BB is referred to in fixed limit poker as the Big Bet, not to be confused with the Big Blind. For example if you look at a fixed limit table online, you will see 1$/2$ games, the small blind is 50c and the big blind is 1$, and the Big Bet is 2$.
Buy-In is used for Pot Limit and No Limit poker games. This is basically the amount of money you buy into a certain PL or NL game. I advise personally that you should buy in for the maximum at all times in a PL or NL game, some exceptions exist, but unless you are a very advanced poker player it usually pays to play with the maximum buy in.
*Note for No Limit and Pot Limit*
Most online poker rooms make the standard max buy in 100 times the big blind. So for a .5c/1$ No Limit Hold Em game, the max buy in is 100 dollars. This may change at your local casinos that are known for having strange buy in structures, and thus you may have to adjust your bankroll strategy slightly in relation to the structure.

Texas HoldEm Fixed Limit:
Ultra Conservative: 500xBB
(For example you should have a bankroll of 1000$ to play the 1/2$ fixed limit game)
Conservative: 300xBB
(This would translate into a 600$ bankroll at 1/2$)
Gambler: 150xBB
(300$ bankroll at 1/2$)
Texas HoldEm No Limit and Pot Limit:
Ultra Conservative: 40 Buy-Ins
(At a .50c/1$ No Limit game with max 100$ buy-ins you should have a bankroll of 4000$)
Conservative: 25 Buy-Ins
(At a .50c/1$ No Limit game with max 100$ buy-ins you should have a bankroll of 2500$)
Gambler: 10 Buy-Ins
(At a .50c/1$ No Limit game with max 100$ buy-ins you should have a bankroll of 1000$)
*Note I will not continue to include these examples in further poker variations, as Im sure you have an understanding of the math behind this strategy by now*
Omaha Fixed Limit
Ultra Conservative: 300xBB
Conservative: 200xBB
Gambler: 100xBB
Omaha Pot Limit and No Limit
Ultra Conservative: 30 Buy Ins
Conservative: 20 Buy Ins
Gambler: 10 Buy Ins
Omaha High/Low, 8 or Better Limit
Ultra Conservative: 200xBB
Conservative: 100xBB
Gambler: 50xBB
Omaha High/Low, 8 or Better Pot Limit and No Limit
Ultra Conservative: 25 Buy-Ins
Conservative: 20 Buy-Ins
Gambler: 10 Buy-Ins
7 Card Stud
Ultra Conservative: 1000xBB
Conservative: 500xBB
Gambler: 200xBB
7 Card Stud High/Low 8 or Better
Ultra Conservative: 300xBB
Conservative: 200xBB
Gambler: 100xBB
SNGs (Sit and Go Tournaments, or Single Table tournaments)
Ultra Conservative: 50 Buy Ins
Conservative: 25 Buy Ins
Gambler: 10 Buy Ins
MTTs (Multi Table Tournaments)
Ultra Conservative: 300 Buy Ins
Conservative: 200 Buy Ins
Gambler: 100 Buy Ins

Bringing it all together.
Now that you have your strategy, you must implement it into a long term strategy of making your bankroll larger.
I will use myself as an example, I started with a 50 dollar bankroll, I play No Limit Hold Em and I would consider myself Conservative when managing my bankroll.
Now with a 50 dollar bankroll, you can only play .01/.02 cent No Limit Hold Em. At those limits you will be buying into games for 2 dollars. This is exactly 25 buyins for my bankroll, this is perfect for starting my bankroll.
As soon as my bankroll reaches 100 dollars, I can move up to the next limit, .02/.04 cent No Limit. The buy in is now at 4 dollars which is exactly 25 buy ins for your bankroll.
Again when my bankroll reaches 200 to 250 dollars, I will now move up to the next limit, .05/.1 cent where they buy in is 10 dollars.
You will continue this process all the way up the ranks. Along the way you will gain much needed experience and your skill will probably increase with the limits thus keeping your winning rate around the same, and increasing profits over time.
This includes moving down the ranks as well. If you currently have 1000$ and play the .25/.5 cent No Limit Hold Em games, and suddenly have a bad run and end up down to 750$, you should consider moving down to the .1/.25 cent game again until you have 1000$ again. This is suggested to reduce your variance, but if you happen to lose half your bankroll, you must move down in order to stay in compliance with this bankroll strategy.

Quick note about multi tabling. Multi tabling will require you to have a larger bankroll than suggested above but not as much as you may think. If you single table at the conservative level, then you should consider moving to ultra conservative if you play 4 tables at the same time (this usually translates in moving down only one level in limits).
One thing to note about multi tabling is that you will increase your profits even though you are moving down the limit structure, and thus I highly suggest for anyone serious about online poker to learn to multi table effectively.

This is all for bankroll strategy, I hope you all learn how to manage your poker money like a pro, please comment and come back again.

The Hockey Muddle

The hockey, which is already in cold after failing to qualify for the Olympics, this could be the final blow to revival of Indian hockey. “I will respond to these things at a later stage. We do not have an instant coffee machine that you can get results immediately. It takes time to regain your position. We have put down the process in place and the results will take some time,” was the reply of KPS Gill after the debacle at Chile. Even now, he is only worried about his job and only god knows what these administrators are doing!
Gill has given a very good reply to the threat of FIH. He seemed hardly perturbed by FIH’s threat to consider moving the 2010 world cup (hockey) out of India if his federation did not get its act together. “We are prepared if the world cup is not held in India. We have not had the world cup here for ages,” he said. Isn’t that a ‘too cool’ attitude? Being cool is perhaps the mantra of Gill towards Indian hockey. But I just want to say that Gill had no right to ridicule the players who play for the country by dint of their merit. They are selected and not elected! A player is selected based on his merit only, while any stupid person can win elections.
The sports minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, is also behaving like a fool and is refraining from any interference with the hockey. I have a question for him, “Why did you demote hockey from the list of priority sports’ last year, when you had no power?” Even the die-hard optimist is pretty sure that the administration of the game will not change, unless we heed the advice of CPI member of Parliament, Gurudas Dasgupta, who has said that the only way to save the game is to physically throw out Gill and his honchos from managing the game.
The FIH has issued warning but when asked about the reason behind their concerns they were clueless. There were several concerns, but we will not communicate the exact details was the answer of the FIH communications manager, Arjen Meijer. The decision also questions the intent of FIH. It is not sure whether they are really doing this for well being of the hockey. Just because they have failed to implement a directive of FIH, they will not be allowed to host the world cup. Question is – Whether world cups were allotted on such basis for all other countries too or is it only India that has been given this condition? To the best of my knowledge world cups in all sports are allotted on the criteria of rotation, good ground venues, easy transportation from overseas as well within the host country and proper accommodation for the participants. The FIH is acting as a bully and I have just no idea why is it so? What are the motives behind this? Probably our media can help us out.

In its final tune-up before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, the SIU women's golf team fell just short of its second straight tournament championship.
The Salukis followed up their record-breaking showing at the Saluki Invitational with a second-place tie with Cincinnati at the Illini Spring Classic, falling nine strokes short of tournament champion Illinois. The second-place finish gave SIU its fourth top-three finish of the season.
Coach Diane Daugherty said the Salukis had a good showing despite competing in difficult weather conditions that included high winds and temperatures in the 30s. The team's strategy helped SIU excel in less than favorable conditions and Daugherty said she hopes it carries over into conference championships.
"They're focusing better right now than they have all year long," Daugherty said. "I hope we can repeat what we did last year and everybody peak at the right time."
The Fighting Illini shot a three-round total of 924 and a final round of 294 to clinch Illinois' 11th Spring Classic championship and first under second year head coach Renee Sloane.
After struggling in the morning, Illinois responded with a strong afternoon showing, Sloane said in an interview on the Illinois athletics Web site.
"We told the girls to keep their heads in the game after the first round, and they did just that," Sloane said.
SIU's top performances came from its upperclassmen. Seniors Kelly Gerlach and Christine Zoerlein shot 72 and 73 on the par-72 course in the final round to finish in a fifth-place tie with a total score of 231. Juniors Lauren May and Braidy Hood finished in tied for 10th and 21st, respectively.
SIU finished ahead of Missouri Valley Conference rivals Bradley (fourth) and Indiana State (seventh) and in-state schools Northern Illinois (eighth), Eastern Illinois (12th), Loyola-Chicago (14th) and Western Illinois (15th).
Hood said she was proud of her teammates' performance heading into the MVC Championships.
"It's not a surprise that we finished in second. We know how good we are and we know we can play with any other team," Hood said. "But we're going not going to focus on the other teams, instead we'll focus on how we can improve individually."
The Salukis will be back in action Sunday, April 13 through Tuesday, April 15 at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Omaha, Neb.
Luis C. Medina can be reached at 536-3311 ext. 238 or lcm1986@siu.edu.
