BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Italian shooter Chiara Cainero won the gold of the women's skeet after a shoot-off at the Beijing Shooting Range on Thursday. Her score, 93 hits, set an Olympic record for the rule changing.

Sharing the same score with the champion, American Kimberly Rhode nailed down the silver and German shooter Christine Brinker got the bronze.

Gold medalist at the 2006 World Cup Final and runner-up in 2007, the 30-year-old collected 72 hits in the qualification round to lead among six finalists, while the American, 29, and the German, 27, notched up 70 hits as third and fourth.

With a good start, Cainero missed the first of the three targets in the second series and the last in the third series.

This dragged her to the same line with Rhode and Brinker who boasted an all-hit record so far.

In the competition later on, the trio each missed two birds in heavy rain and were forced to a shoot-off.

The baby-faced Rhode started first. She managed to knock down the first plate but let go of the second.

The brown-haired 2007 world champion did the same.

When Cainero raised her gun, her compatriots carrying Italian national flag were about to cheer.

And the pretty shooter did let them down. Two hits. The gold was hers.

"This is the first important victory for me," she was excited. Although she had victories in both European Championships and World Cups, she ended her last Olympic trip with just an eighth place.

"I feel really lucky because this morning in the qualification I was able to shoot without any background noise, which helped me reach the final," she said.

But the final in the afternoon was difficult. "The weather was bad," she said, "but the weather was the same for everyone competing today."

In the following stage of the prolonged shoot-off, Rhode rallied to down both target while Brinker lapsed again, surrendering the silver to the smiling blonde.

Although she didn't win the gold, Rhode appeared optimistic.

"I have a collection now. I have a gold, a silver and a bronze," she smiled.

The girl won two gold medals in double trap at Athens and Atlanta Olympics as well as a bronze in Sydney.

Previously a shooter in double trap event, she converted to skeet in 2006 as the former disciplined was cancelled at the Beijing Games.

"It is challenging, both physically and mentally," she had said.

Rhode conveyed her gratitude to her compatriots. "I'd like to say thank you to all the people back home for getting me where I am today."

Brinker said she was very happy as well.

"I didn't lose the gold, I won the bronze," said the girl.

She also complained about the rain. "My feet and shoes are wet, and the rain made it difficult to shoot."

Chinese shooter Wei Ning entered the final with the same score of a 70 hits. But she failed to hold her nerves and plunged to the sixth.

The dampened girl burst into tears immediately after the final.

"The problem was not about the technique, but the rain. It really affected my performances because the rain made my gun slippery so I missed several target. I paid too much attention to my posture but neglected the most important thing."

She noted that the rain also affected her mental state. "I was a little upset and in a hurry," she said.

World record holder Danka Bartekova from Slovakia and defending champion Diana Igaly from Hungary finished 8th and 13th, failing to advance to the final.

I dare say it is having a profound impact in many different ways.  There is no doubt that the number of youth hockey players in Michigan has declined.  You can take a look at the Mlive hockey forums and see many teams posting messages about openings on their teams – looking to fill out their rosters.  I have to imagine that some of this is because of the decline in the number of players.  I’m sure there are other reasons, but much of this can be traced back directly to the declining numbers due to the economy and the mass exodus of people from Michigan in search of jobs.
 
We have also seen more chatter this year than in years past regarding the amount of travel.  I posted previously about travel, but the reality is that many people in Michigan simply can not afford to travel as much as they used to.  I’m sure some families have decided to cut hockey from their list of activities simply based on the cost of travel alone.  It’s a shame, but I believe it is a harsh reality in our great state at the moment.
 
I know there are some associations out there that have scholarship type programs available for families with children that want to play hockey but can not afford it.  My fear is that these programs will begin to dry up as participation and sponsorship decreases leaving kids without the experience of playing this great game.
 
The positives (if they can be found) are that there is some areas of growth in Michigan and there are particular metropolitan areas that are showing better growth than others:
 
Grand Rapids is at 7% unemployment
Kalamazoo is at 6.9% unemployment
Extreme Southwestern Michigan is at 6.4% unemployment
Ann Arbor is at 6.3% unemployment
 
We are also seeing some growth in Professional and Business services, Information, as well as Education and Health services across these same metropolitan areas.  This is good news that hopefully will continue and ultimately stabilize the economy to the point where it can begin positively impacting things like youth hockey.

Dave Huxtable was chuckling when he said it, but the University of Central Florida defensive coordinator knew deep down there was a lot of truth to his admission.
Shoot, those defensive backs know the defense better than I do, Huxtable said with a laugh.
Thats understandable considering that Huxtable is in his first season as the Knights defensive coordinator, while defensive backs Joe Burnett, Shareff Rashad, Jason Venson and Johnell Neal are the most experienced group in all of college football.
With their 134 combined starts among the four seniors, UCFs secondary is the most veteran-laden group in the country. And theres plenty of talent and production to go with all of that experience. Athlon Sports Magazine ranked UCFs secondary No. 5 in all of college football, behind only national powers Ohio State, Clemson, USC and Oregon. UCF ranked third in the country last year in interceptions with 24, and not surprisingly 18 came from Burnett, Neal, Venson and Rashad. And the teams top tackler came from the secondary again last season for the third year in a row.
All four are back for their senior seasons, and poised to help UCFs defense become one of the most suffocating groups in college football. Already, they have made life miserable in camp for UCFs green passing game, picking off passes and laying out receivers with big hits like the one Neal recently put on tight end Corey Rabazinski.
With the group we have, the potential is high, the ability is there and game experience is there, said Rashad, who led UCF in tackles last season from his strong safety position. I really think we have a chance as a defense and a secondary to go out and be dominant this year on defense.
The secondary is one of the nations best because the cat-quick Burnett is a future NFL player, because Neal plays much bigger than his 176-pound frame and Venson and Rashad are elite safeties with exceptional size and speed.
But because the group came into college together three years ago and have been on the field through so many games, there is a chemistry that bonds them like a brotherhood. And when they arent picking off passes on the field, Burnett, Neal, Rashad and Venson are usually together. Oftentimes, they can be found playing spades together in the dorm, going to the lanes for a bowling tournament or playing doubles tennis on campus.
That tightness away from the football field has helped the foursome develop a unique sort of trust on the field and its made them an even better group.
The trust that we have in each other is incredible, said Venson, the senior free safety with six interceptions and 30 career starts. s no doubts with any of us. The group almost broke apart in the offseason with a near defection and a scary incident.
Burnett, a preseason pick for the Nagurski and Badnarik watch lists with his 12 career interceptions and three punt returns for touchdowns, considered leaving UCF for the NFL. Admittedly, the pull of wanting to stay with Neal, Venson and Rashad was a deciding factor in him returning for his senior season. Of course, a few lobbying calls from Neal and Venson helped get Burnett back to UCF.
I was going back and forth with it, but Im glad I came back because Im graduating in December and Im here with the three guys Ive been with all along, said the 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior from Eustis. When I was down in Fort Lauderdale (preparing for the NFLs Pre-Draft Camp) I just had a gut feeling that I was making the wrong decision. So I called Coach OLeary and he accepted me back and the guys welcomed me back.
Getting Neal back was also a welcomed addition after he was shot four times in his left arm and chest in May while in his hometown of Baton Rouge, La. A feud involving Neals cousin nearly cost him his life, but hes already back at camp showing no aftereffects of the wounds.
At that time, it wasnt even about football; we just wanted Johnell to be OK, Venson said. I didnt think hed be back for the season, but hes already back for camp. Hes a really tough guy.
UCF head coach George OLeary said his veteran secondary has a chance to be one of the toughest in college football this season. Because the veteran group is so good at ball hawking in coverage, OLeary said it allows the Knights to take more chances with blitzes and stunts to get pressure on the quarterback. And without question they have a chance to be the best group of defensive backs OLeary has ever coached.
I dont care what level of football you are on, whether its college or the pros, your cornerbacks dictate what kind of defense you can play, he said. ll let you know how good they are after the last game. But I know right now they are getting their hands on a lot of balls and our receivers and quarterbacks are having a tough time with them.

However Duncan also shoots significantly below average from the free throw line. This decreases his fantasy value.

The reality of this means that a player such as Duncan may kill your fantasy team in one category, despite the fact that he is highly useful in many others (blocks, rebounds etc). A player such as Shaquille O'Neal is a FNBA rookie mistake from this perspective -- he will absolutely demolish your chances of winning the FT% category. If you have him on your squad, you might as well give up on that category and get every other poor FT shooter in the league and concentrate on their other categories.

The techniques of ranking using a spreadsheet can get a bit daunting if you are not too keen on mathematics or use of Excel, but try to follow this analysis. In order to rank your players, you need to do the following:

1. Copy the 2007/08 NBA statistics for every player in the league in the categories listed above.

2. Make adjustments to the statistics to reflect what you predict the players to output during the 2008/09 season.

3. Insert rookies to the list and make conservative estimates of their statistics.

4. Work out the average for each category of all players (eg work out the average PPG, the average FG% etc).

5. Calculate the standard deviation for each category. Your spreadsheet software should be capable of doing this for you.

6. Take each player's output in each category, subtract the average for that category. Divide this number by the standard deviation.

7. The resulting number if ABOVE ZERO, is GOOD. If BELOW ZERO, is BAD.

8. Tally all category results as per 7 (remember that turnovers is a negative). This total determines the rank for each player - the higher the better.

If you watch a major sporting event, youll see that the play-by-play guy is usually an older gentleman or woman in the booth. You cant just come out of college and go to work as a play-by-play guy at a network. What I did was I got a job in the insurance industry working for a company that insured auto dealerships all over the country, which allowed me to have flexibility, and I started calling sports however I could. I did a lot of work in the south at UNC-Wilmington. I called all their basketball games for several years, which then led to regional coverage. Its just a snowball effect, until finally in 2004 I had a big enough resume and had made enough contacts that ESPN decided they wanted me as part of their family, so I signed a contract, left the insurance business for good and have been a fulltime ESPN commentator since 2004. If you want to be a play-by-play guy its usually a pretty long road to get to the network level.
Q: A lot of times, broadcasters are associated with one sport or another, but in your case is it fair to say youre associated with a particular network, which gives you the freedom to have a broad range of events?
A: Yeah, I like doing different sports year-round. Obviously, I do the tennis throughout the year thats just sort of been my niche but I also like doing any sport. Im the kind of guy they will call and say, Hey, heres mixed martial arts. Do you want to do it? So then I learn all about that sport and try to call it. I love the variety of calling different sports, which is why Ive been so excited to get involved in this bull riding. Its something that at the start of the year I had no idea I would be involved in. When I was asked I was like, Great, I would love to do it.
Q: How did you come to be involved with the Team Shootout?
A: Basically it sort of came together like everything else in television, it seems like its who you know. A good friend of mine was part of the company producing the events for the P
and they were looking for the announcers and I popped into his brain because I was the right look and the right style of commentator that he knew he wanted on this sport. I basically have a reputation of approaching every sport I do with a lot of passion. I love what I do and I consider it a privilege, not a right. Therefore, when Im involved in a sport, they know theyre going to get 100 percent. I think when youre involved in a sport like bull riding, typically, people who watch that sport are passionate about it too. You need your commentators to be as into it as the fans, and not just picking up a paycheck. Thats why I popped into the producers mind when it came time to pick the play-by-play guy, just because he knows Ill enjoy whatever sport Im calling.
Q: You and I spoke before about, should I call it, your and you had an interesting response which I thought was a huge compliment for the P
. Care to share those thoughts?
A: Normally when I get asked to do a sport, its a done deal. They will say we need you to call this volleyball match or we need you to call this college football game. This, however, was a different situation. What impressed me was that the P
, when selecting the announcers, wanted to approve those announcers. When this particular producer contacted me, he said I have something I want you to do, but I have to get them to sign off on it. I think youre the right guy, but ultimately its their decision. So what I had to do, basically, was submit tapes of my work in the past, and because I really enjoy bull riding and this was something I wanted to do outside of what I normally do, I wrote Randy Bernard a letter along with my tapes. I told him about me and the passion I would have for the sport and what I thought I would bring to the shows, and thankfully whatever he saw was good enough for him to give me the thumbs up.
Q: Having never announced a bull riding event, how did you go about preparing for this assignment? How much time does that take, and where do you even begin the process?
A: Fortunately, my process began at home I married a Texan. I know that bull riding is not considered rodeo at the P
level, but my wife grew up in Texas and rodeo was a team sport in her high school, so when she found out I was going to be calling bull riding she jumped right on it. She got me fired up even more and started telling me all about her experiences with bull riding growing up in Texas. So basically what I did was I just started the research process. I would contact people that I knew that were involved in the sport, every night I would just read as much as I could, I had the people that were going to be producing the events send me as many of the Versus shows as they could just so I could saturate myself with watching the sport and not only watching it but seeing how its called by other commentators. That was my process I just tried to saturate myself with bull riding for about a month until I felt like I had a good enough handle that I could go on air and sound at least like I know what Im talking about. Hopefully this is going to continue into next year and J.W. has already set me up with a couple of guys to try to go visit on their ranch at the end of the season just to be around them. Thats my next step to go to a couple of ranches and hang out with these guys and find out firsthand about the sport, not just through talking with people.
Q: Thats a great point, and one that Im sure not everyone thinks about. Not only do you have to familiarize yourself with the sport, but you also have to develop chemistry with your partner in a relatively short period of time. Talk about your working relationship with J.W. Hart.
A: I think as a play-by-play guy in any sport one thing Ive learned is that if you can go to an expert like J.W. Hart and you humble yourself before them and say, look, Ive been given this opportunity to be involved in your sport. Its a sport that I greatly admire, and one that I think I would have a lot of passion for, but I need the knowledge. I need you to tell me what not to say. I need you to tell me what to say and I need you to just educate me in the sport, and Ive never had an athlete in a particular sport be offended by that or say they dont want to take the time to do it. Most people who are at the professional level are passionate about that sport and want everyone else to be. When you humble yourself and say, look I dont know it all but I want to know it all, then a guy like J.W. Hart is going to jump in there and educate you as well as he can. J.W. in particular is great to work with because hes very laidback. He doesnt have a quick temper and hes not impatient. Hes just a dream, really, to work with, especially for someone who is trying to become an expert in a sport like the P
where your fans are I dont want to compare them to another sport, but I would say theyre probably similar to NASCAR in that the people that watch this sport have been watching it for a long time and are very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of it.
Q: Once it was time to do it for real, how did it go?
A: It went great. Fortunately I had learned enough in the time I was given before we started taping the shows that I felt like I had a command on what was going on and why it was happening. J.W. is so knowledgeable that its easy for a play-by-play guy like me to set him up, because I dont have to go into a lot of detail setting him up. I can sort of ask a leading question and then he takes it and runs with it. It worked out very well and I thought we had very good chemistry. I look forward to working with him a lot in the future.
Q: You already spoke about the passion of our fans. What do you do to win them over or to be accepted?
A: If I had the magic answer for that I think I would probably be doing something else. The important thing you do as a commentator is love what youre doing. If youre really into the sport that youre calling, your fan base that is a part of that sport is going to know that, and theyre going to pick up on that. I try to call sports and bull riding in particular with the idea that Im sitting on the couch at home with a friend, what are we talking about? Its just a couple of guys or my wife and I, what do they want to know that I can tell them? Hopefully the P

Thats really impressed me because, I guess, Im used to dealing with professional athletes that are pampered and handed everything. These guys are not at the beginning stages of the sport, but I think theyre on the cutting edge of this sport going huge and it makes me very happy to see a sport with good people in it, and thats whats sort of set this sport apart is just the depth of people that are riding these bulls. Its so unique and refreshing to me that if you dont perform, if you dont win, then youre going home with an empty pocket. I mean, these guys are riding for their paychecks, and if they dont make their ride, placing in the event, then theyre not making any money. You dont find that in too many professional sports these days. Its fun for me to see a sport that still does it that way. You would think it would be a cutthroat sport its every man for himself but Ive been impressed with the fact that they have to show up and they have to perform to get paid, but at the same time theyre in the chute with each other, pulling their ropes, theyre helping each other out, and theres just a lot of old-fashioned camaraderie and character.
