Why did 24-year-old William Nguyen of Louisiana's Jefferson Parish allegedly visit trailer homes impersonating an immigration officer and robbing people at gun point using a fake firearm?
A) He was bored and wanted some cheap thrills.
B) He desperately wanted to become a confidential informant for the New Orleans Police Department.
C) He needed money to pay for his sex change operation so he could be with his lesbian girlfriend.
Actually it's Don't always assume it's We here at Dumb as a Blog are not that predictable. Besides, at least makes sense if it weren't wholly fabricated.
Nguyen wanted to get Sargent Roy Phillips' attention so that Nguyen could get on the C.I. gravy train and get paid for his crime tips, authorities say. How, you may ask, was robbing people at fake gunpoint for $40 going to achieve this result? Was Nguyen planning to:
A) Later tell Sgt. Phillips he had info about the robberies and name someone else?
B) Later tell Sgt. Phillips he had info about the robberies and name himself?
C) Let himself be caught by Sgt. Phillips and then claim to have information about even bigger crimes to trade up and become a C.I.?
Hard to know, but it's not necessarily All I know is the plan was stupid enough that it's unclear how it would have come off if it worked perfectly. So far it has failed to achieve any of it's stated objectives.

Toni Smith or Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refuses to stand at attention for the Anthem because of deep, important, valid personal beliefs, and we as a society crap all over them for it.  We say that theyre wrong for acting that way.  But two hundred people walk over Francis Scott Keys sweet tunes for no better reason than securing a couple of metal bleacher seats in prime homerun territory?  Thats cool, man.  Dont worry about it.  No big deal.
4) The National Anthem is a cool, meaningful song that should be respected; God Bless America is a little different.  Not that it doesnt deserve much love, but it always feels a little out of place, like were trying too hard to showcase our patriotism.  I dont know if thats the best explanation.  Bottom line, for whatever reason, Ive never felt it was nearly on the same level as the Anthem.  You can walk around the ballpark, get a hot dog, talk to a friend during God Bless America and it doesnt feel strange.
Anyway, they played God Bless America in the seventh inning, we all stood up, Billy and Chris took off their hats - business as usual (I wouldve taken off my hat if Id been wearing one.  Why?  Because Im a follower).  As I listened, it seemed like this particular version had a little extra flair thrown in - like they stretched out some of the notes to add some pizzazz.  It was like the instrumental of the Ronan Tynan version.  Eventually it came to what we thought was the end, Billy started to put his hat back onand the song kept going.  Not for long, but the flair had thrown him off, there was more song to be played, and he had jumped the gun.  He let his displeasure be known by loudly saying, OH COME ON!   
This, of course, cracked me up.  He wasnt trying to be disrespectful, not at all, but the combination of a never-ending song and his failure to secure one of the Dustin Pedroia bobbleheads being given away prior to the game (more on that in a minute) had led him to his breaking point.  Billy wasnt lashing out at God Bless America, he was lashing out at the inequities and inconsistencies of life, and I thought it was hilarious.
3) The Pedroia Situation has to be number three.  When I bought the tickets, I picked August 2 for two reasons: one, it was the closest date that worked for all four of us and two, they were giving away Dustin Pedroia bobbleheads to the first 4,000 fans.  Unfortunately, I have a problem with not reading things closely, so it took awhile before I learned that the giveaway was planned for the first 4,000 KIDS ONLY.
This took a toll on Billy, who apparently is a big Pedroia fan.  Before the night was through, he had gone to every usher in the place, trying his best to talk someone into giving up the bobblehead.  No dice, even after they started giving them out to random adults.  The best moment, however, was soon after we entered the ballpark.  We were out in left field, checking things out, when a group of three kids wandered by.  One of us, I forget who, suggested that Billy offer them a couple of bucks to get him a Pedroia.  So he did.
It was hilarious, seeing a grown man chatting up three adolescents in the farthest reaches of the stadium.  I expected Chris Hansen to appear at any time.  The kicker, though, the thing that made me lose faith in the children of Rhode Island, was when I asked Billy how much he paid the kid to get the merchandise.  I figured it was at least five, maybe ten.  If the kid was smart, he recognized the desperation and held out for the Hamilton.
No, he gave him two dollars.  A couple of Georges.  Thats it.  I was shocked when I heard that.  Not so much because Billy lowballed him off the bat - thats just good business - but because the kid didnt try to drive up the price at all.  Clearly, Rhode Island schools need to add Economics to the curriculum.
2) For the latter part of the game, there was a drunk fan standing at the top of the bleachers.  At some point, he made it his goal to taunt the centerfielder for the opposing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.  Only problem was, he didnt know the name of the centerfielder for the opposing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.  So for who knows how many innings, we were subjected to witty remarks directed at Number 36.  If youre gonna heckle, at least buy a program.  Make an effort.  And show me something early, or stop shouting.  If youre giving a guy a hard time for backing up a play - in other words, making a good baseball play - youre too stupid and/or drunk to heckle. 
The guy disappeared in the eighth, I think, which was sad because I was very close to starting a How drunk are you? chant (I think it wouldve caught on).  When he returned, maybe a half inning later, I nudged Chris, who in turn nudged my brother and suggested he trip him on his way up the stairs.  He didnt realize right away who it was, or he might actually have done it.
Oh, and for the record: Matt Carson, number 36sorry about the douchebag in the bleachers on August 2.  Im sure you get taunted a lot by opposing fans, but I was impressed by how well you handled it.
1) As luck would have it, we found ourselves four seats that were almost completely surrounded by families.  Behind us, six or seven kids from a birthday party were sitting with what appeared to be two adults.  The kids kept accidentally kicking Billy in the back; by the fifth inning, he was about ready to give somebody, anybody, a piece of his mind.  (This was the same group that, amazingly, allowed three kids to leave the area without adult supervision and walk down to the bullpen for autographs.  These kids were maybe ten years old - maybe.  Not a parenting move I would have made.)  They did provide me with a moment of levity, however, when the one Yankees fan in the group started a s go Yankees! cheer.  His friends responded with, s go Red Sox!  Within about ten seconds, I had no clue who was saying what.  I think if you recorded it and played it backwards, it said Paul is dead.
Now, to the front was an older guy with a couple of older ladies, one of whom Im assuming was his wife.  There were a couple of kids down there who were really well behaved.  Barely heard anything out of them the whole night.  Nothing worth complaining about there.
Our left flank carried the greatest threat to our sanity.  The actual composition was fuzzy, but as near as I could figure we were looking at a mother, two young kids, a grandmother, and a father.  Though everyone in the group had their weird little quirks, it was the father that really caught the eye of all four people in our group.  Three incidents in particular stand out:
He and the mother were bringing the kids somewhere and made it down onto the walkway at the front of the bleachers.  The father was carrying one of the boys.  All of a sudden, my brother noticed him yelling at the woman, Take him, take him, Im dropping him!  Fortunately, she was there to grab the child so he didnt have to worry about, I dont know, putting down the beer he was holding.  I like a man who has his priorities in order.
As the game wore on and this wonderful fellow continued to down as much beer as possible, we noticed that the threat of nudity became greater and greater.  He was completely dressed at the beginning; by the time they left, his Red Sox jersey was completely unbuttoned, and the young lady with him was informing the children that it was time to go, before Daddy took his pants off. 
On their way out of our section, the ball park, and our lives, the mother tried to give the father a couple of those ice cream-filled batting helmets to hold.  They were empty, of course, save for some sticky ice cream residue.  She was struggling with both kids and the assorted crap that all mothers carry whenever they go out in public with their children; he was holding - surprise - a beer.  His response: I dont wanna touch that!  This happened immediately in front of my brother, who noted on the way home that we were lucky he hadnt had anything to drink, because if he had, he probably would have said something.  And that, friends, would have been bad.
This guy had one redeeming quality, at least: he showed me that even though I think Im a bad father sometimes, I really could be doing a lot worse.
Now, I know Ive made it sound as though this was the worst game and the worst ballpark in the history of the world.  There were some good points, however.  We got to see a six-run Paw Sox rally in the bottom of eighth, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 victory.  Ben Broussard, waived by the Rangers and picked up by the Yankees, hit a long homerun off the centerfield scoreboard, just above and to the left of us.  The food was terrific - I had never had an italian sausage and peppers with the peppers underneath the sausage; much easier to eat and enjoy that way.  And McCoy Stadium is a nice ballpark, with very good sightlines and a sort of quaint vibe - the luxury boxes, for example, are at field level, which is a nice bit of individuality.
Bottom line: Pawtucket will definitely get another chance, if only because I need to see if this game was the rule or the exception.

Nolan Dalla, World Series of Poker Media Director, who co-authored a biography of the late and legendary poker star Stu Unger, is of the opinion that these new competitors with surprisingly high skill levels and sophistication of play are the result of professional poker ?wannabes? taking full advantage of the countless poker teaching tools available in books, on the internet and various tutorials on DVD that can be purchased by mail. Besides, players can hone their skills playing for small stakes, or even with play money at the numerous online poker sites, gradually improving their skills without the pressures encountered in big-time poker tournaments.

I lost $1,636.15 today, marking my second largest losing day ever (the largest loss is detailed in the first post of this blog).
The majority (~$1,500) of it was lost in 30/60 HL Stud.

I basically never scooped a big pot, when someone would donk call down with a trash hand(example below), never hit my draws for half, and pretty much got screwed in every way possible. I guess I won't be back at the 10/20 or 30/60 tables soon. Surprisingly, the players at 30/60 are quite bad, but they are aggressive causing high variance.

I withdrew about $5k and left about $2k to play with. I don't need this kind of aggrevation of high limit poker. I also don't need an extra $3k a month from grinding, so I begin to question why the hell I am basically wasting all my free time away from work playing poker.

In fact this idiot tarcards won a bunch of pots with idiotic hands and screwed me over about 4 times on both tables. He was not the only one, I couldn't win vs. any of them.

The oil secreting and sweat glands atrophy, and the skin cannot retain its moisture. Therefore, it becomes dry and scaly. Constant facial expressions form characteristic lines. Gravity makes the situation worse and contributes to the formation of drooping eyelids and jowls. Also, eyebrows tend to move up as someone ages perhaps because of forehead wrinkles and the skin has less of an ability to repair itself so wounds heal more slowly.
There are other forces at play that can make your skin suffer, such as :
1. The sun damages collagen fibers and causes an accumulation of abnormal elastin. Metalloproteinases, or enzymes, are produced that are able to repair most of the damage, however, it is this repetition of the rebuilding process that is done over and over again that causes skin problems.
2. The suns UV radiation promotes oxidation. This also leads to the development of skin abnormalities.
3. Cigarette smoking causes the thickening and fragmentation of elastin, reduces circulation and the amount of oxygen that is supplied to the skin, and leads to less Collagen formation and reduced water content in the skin. Lastly, smoking compromises the ability of the skin to fend off free radicals causing cell destruction.
4. Air pollution – Ozone may be a problem for the skin. It may cause depletion of Vitamin E in the skin which is a vital antioxidant.
5. Rapid weight loss – This can cause fine lines since it reduces the volume of fat cells which cushion the face. This will cause the skin to sag.
6. Heredity – You may have inherited some skin characteristics from your parents.
Wrinkles are the most noticable signs of aging. As tissues sag, these lines form a type of canvas that is covered with cracks that have varying depths. As time marches on, they deepen and reach the dermis. As the dermis loses its elasticity, it becomes slack which leads to the formation of more pronounced wrinkles over 0.05 mm in depth.
Here is the normal progression of wrinkles characterized by age group:
20-25 – Vertical wrinkles on ones forehead and even between the eyebrows may already be visible. Fine lines at the external edges of the eyes are not yet noticeable.
25-40 – In the epidermis, wrinkles begin to deepen. They are less than 0.0005 mm in depth. They are caused by the superficial drying out of ones skin as well as the slowing down of cellular renewal.
40-50 – Fine lines around the lips, crows feet, furrows alongside of the nose and the line between the eyebrows are all beginning to deepen. The skin loses it elasticity and the facial contours are not less well defined.
50 and over – Hormonal secretions end as menopause appears and this speeds up the aging process. The skins surface begins to modify and intermediary lines are replaced by ever deepening furrows.
The older you become, the more wrinkles you get. You can minimize this damage by taking good care of your skin.
Anti Aging Skin Care Treatments: here are a few promising treatments for sagging skin. There are some new wrinkle creams and topical lotions, like Avotone or Revitol, that contain natural ingredients that may help lessen this problem. For example:
1. Argireline - this is a safer alternative to Botox. It is not derived from any poisonous substance, but from naturally occurring amino acids. This element relaxes facial tension because it is able to reduce the excessive release of neurotransmitters which are also known as catecholamines. These make your facial muscles become tense. Crisis of Social Partnership: Collapse of National Pay Talks in Ireland

The 21 year old social partnership pact between unions, employers and the Government in Ireland is entering one of its periodic crises as one national pay agreement Towards 2016 begins to run out and talks on a successor have collapsed. The Government is expected to attempt resuscitation in late August or early September, writes Padraig Yeates.
Calls are being made for the social partners to invoke the spirit of 1987, but a lot has changed since then. In 1987 things were so bad that the Government was about to run out of funds to make social welfare payments, unions had only to look at Thatchers Britain to see what lay in store if a new rightwing political consensus prevailed and business leaders were desperately seeking stability. The then Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Charlie Haughey persuaded mandarins, unions and employers alike that centralised pay bargaining was the only game in town.
The gamble paid off. Today the Irish gross national debt ratio is half the EU average, unemployment and inflation are a quarter of the real levels in the 1980s, interest rates are a third of what they were then and taxes have been slashed. The problem is that personal debt levels for many workers, especially young home makers with mortgages, are multiples of what they were in the 1980s. Interest rates are rising, while the price of basic items such as food and heating soar. Cuts in direct taxation, in return for pay restraint, are no longer an option as they are already very low. Instead, indirect taxation for a variety of increasingly privatised services has been rising for some time.
The natures of the key social partners, unions and employers, have also changed since 1987. There are more workers organised in trade unions than ever before, but union density in the private sector has fallen. This is partly because unions have been slow to supplement their traditional service model, based on meeting the needs of members in a fairly stable labour market, with the campaigning and organising activities required in a more dynamic and increasingly volatile economy.
But the main reason has been a deliberate policy by many employers, large and small, foreign and indigenous, to discourage employees from joining unions. Professor John Geary of UCD, in the only independent national survey to date, found that over 70 per cent of workers would join a union if their boss approved.
While a pay freeze is a deal breaker for unions in the current economic climate, employers appear equally resistant to concede collective bargaining as a right to employees, although it exists in almost every other EU member state. The balance among employers appears to be shifting increasingly in favour of this hard line position.
Unfortunately the national interest counts for little when increasingly mobile and unregulated global finance capital turns investment into a lottery. Profit is taken on a short term basis and many investors cut and run when the bet turns sour. Unions, like social consensus, are seen as a handicap. Long term sustainability, with the concomitant investment needed in people, plant and RD, is no longer on the agenda of some employers.
Recent attempts to facilitate collective bargaining through social partnership were scuttled by Ryanair, now one of Europes largest airlines. It successfully defended its right not to concede de facto recognition to IMPACT pilots in the Irish Supreme Court last year. Some employers are now challenging voluntarist forms of collective bargaining which served the social partners well for decades. Early this year hoteliers threatened a legal challenge to Employment Rights Orders and in June a group of electrical contractors obtained an injunction against the implementation of the Registered Employment Agreement for the industry.
Hundreds of thousands of workers in sectors governed by EROs and REAs could be affected if the courts rule in favour of these employers. The Government could resolve the problem if it had the will. It is a signatory to the UN Declaration of Human Rights, and International Labour Organisation conventions 87 and 98, which guarantee the right of workers to organise and seek representation with employers.
Far from showing any desire to do so, the new Taoiseach Brian Cowen refused to give a commitment to implement Article 28 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which would have achieved the same objective, during the recent Lisbon referendum. This prevented SIPTU, the countrys largest union, from recommending a vote and confirmed two large private sector unions, the TEEU and Unite, in their opposition to the Treaty.
Cowens concessions to the farming lobby in the week before the referendum to protect it from trade liberalisation proposals in WTO negotiations underlined the message that workplace rights were low on the Governments agenda.
Despite the economic downturn and hardening attitudes of some employers, partnership still has great strengths as a problem solving and conflict resolution mechanism. It has worked for a small open economy because employers secured changes needed to maintain competitiveness and unions delivered pay increases and social wage dividends for workers. As with any partnership entering hard times, this one needs reinforcing. Instead one of the partners is progressively closing the door on the other. Collective bargaining is certainly about power sharing, but it is even more critically about respect.
The current breakdown is nothing new. In fact it is uncannily similar to a crisis seven years ago. On December 17th, 2002, talks on a new agreement to succeed the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness broke down over a revised inability to pay clause from the employers. They wanted companies to be able to refuse any pay rises that might affect their competitiveness.
On August 2nd, 2008, the last straw in the talks was a proposal to amend the inability to pay clause so that even companies doing well could avail of it if they faced the prospect of more difficult trading conditions in the future. The effect of both clauses would be the same, to allow employers to renege on nationally agreed pay increases, or bargain down unions in local negotiations.
When talks collapsed in December of 2002 there seemed little chance of their revival and they did so from the most unlikely sequence of events. In early January the Irish Independent ran a front page story that IBEC was advising members to hold the line with a six months pay pause. The then chairman of the private sector committee of ICTU, SIPTUs Jack OConnor, responded by calling for a one day national strike, followed by a two day national strike, at which point the Government intervened and brokered a new agreement that became known as Sustaining Progress.
This too had its troubles, most notably when the Government failed to strengthen employment legislation ahead of opening Irish borders to the new EU accession state. With high profile disputes exposing the systematic exploitation of migrant workers serving as a backdrop, SIPTU refused to enter talks on a new agreement until employment standards were addressed. It subsequently took six months to negotiate Towards 2016, which had a pay deal lasting just 27 months.
The agreement did lead to better employment standards, including the establishment of the National Employment Rights Agency, but it was now taking longer to negotiate shorter agreements. This reflects the growing disparity in objectives being sought from agreements by employers and unions. The former group wants ever increasing flexibility, while the latter group wants to protect employment standards and employability of members with more in upskilling workers.
That basic dichotomy was reflected in the slow start to the current talks. SIPTU insisted that the Government honour commitments to improve labour standards in Towards 2016 before negotiations began on a new agreement. The talks were then sidelined by the Lisbon Treaty referendum campaign. The Treatys rejection and the growing economic crisis meant the key phase of the talks took place in an atmosphere of collective gloom. It was clear throughout July that the gap between the two sides was too great to be easily bridged and the Government had no strategy for doing so. The employers wanted a pay freeze of between six months and a year for different groups of workers followed by pay rises with an annualized value of 2.8 per cent. Unions wanted a deal that would at least compensate members for inflation, expected to continue at around four to five per cent until the end of 2009. The Government was not even buying into the sort of modest tax reforms and anti-inflationary measures being proposed by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, nor was it addressing the festering sore of collective bargaining.
Private sector unions have already begun serving pay claims, usually in the region of five per cent, to compensate for inflation. The first strike by Mandate, the shop workers union at Byrnes, a small chain of bookstores, is due shortly. One glimmer of hope is that SIPTU has concluded an interim deal for members in the motor trade just before talks on a national pay deal collapsed. This was for three per cent over eight months and is up for renewal in December.
The book store dispute is largely symbolic, but as claims for bigger groups of unions begin to hit the wire the prospect of an irretrievable breakdown in social partnership grows. At present the Government is anxious to portray that breakdown as nothing more than a trial separation, but without an improved pay offer from employers and some imaginative thinking from the Government on how to counter the effects of inflationary pressures it is hard to see partnership being salvaged from the wreckage this time.

"Great changes are happening in Over-the-Rhine, says Dhana Donaldson, community leadership and program director of Emanuel Community Center, which offers the awards. "These women have contributed to the benefit of Over-the-Rhine, either professionally or personally."
The community agency's program began four years ago with a mission of raising kudos to honor those women who overcame personal struggles, in order to make their lives successful.
"It started out for women who would not otherwise be recognized," Donaldson says.
But the face of OTR has changed, so has the recognition program, and in fact, the mission of Emanuel Community Center.
The community center has an education department, which strives to reach people within OTR to help them with their needs, in a "holistic approach," Donaldson says.
But in recent years, as the neighborhood has evolved, the community center has realigned its goals, changing with it, she says.
"We have parents, children, families we serve," Donaldson says. "But now a lot of young professionals are moving in. We have a new strategic plan, one of inclusion."
That plan is to provide a "community connection" for everybody who has made OTR their neighborhood.
The Women of Over-the-Rhine program continues to recognize a diverse group of women who have, in new ways, overcome the odds. But it is the odds not only personal, but for their neighborhood.
"They're not really trying to impress, and yet they do impress," Donaldson says.
The luncheon and program in their honor, where people can hear these women's stories of success, will be from 11:30 a.m.1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at The Phoenix Restaurant, at 812 Race St.
