important players and issues that I thought would factor into the Cardinals' stretch run for 2008. After long hours of careful consideration... Alright, fine, it was only eight minutes of consideration while I was in line to get a bagel. You and I both know it. However, my editor hopefully doesn't know it, and I would like to keep it that way, okay? They're paying me literally tens of dollars to write this column, and I'm afraid if I lose this gig I'll have to go back to the cheap cat food, and I really don't want to. What? No, I don't have cats, I'm allergic. What does that have to do with anything?
So anyway, I was looking at the Cards, and I concluded that the most important player for the rest of this season was Rick Ankiel. It was a sound pick, I thought at the time, and I still agree with most of what I wrote. However, I think that I may just have to change my tune a bit on this one.
It's Adam Wainwright.

ARLINGTON, TX (July 30, 2008). - Boasting an unprecedented lineup of retired greats and top-shelf prospects, Donruss Threads makes its trading card debut in October with a release loaded with autographs and memorabilia cards.
Threads will also bring collectors two significant and headlining names not available anywhere else this year: Pete Rose and Rick Porcello.
Rose, whose 4,256 career hits rank No. 1 all-time, and Porcello, the first-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2007, will have autograph and memorabilia cards in the product. In recent years, Donruss has purchased two Rose game-worn jerseys including a 1973 Cincinnati Reds road jersey worn during the 17-time All-Stars only MVP season.
Having Pete Rose and Rick Porcello in the set is significant, says Donruss Brand Manager Ben Ecklar. The all-time hits leader and arguably the top pitching prospect in the minor leagues Threads will have both.
Porcello had been the only first-round draft pick from the 2007 MLB First Year Player Draft not to have signed certified autographs until Donruss signed him to a deal that was announced in early July. Donruss has obtained a jersey and cap Porcello wore in the 2006 Cape Cod Classic as well as a fielding glove and cleats he wore during minor league play with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The 19-year-old is in his first full professional season since graduating from high school last year, and has spent the season pitching at Class A Lakeland where he was the starter and winner in the 2008 Florida State League All-Star Game.
Roses presence in trading card products since 1989 can best be described as sparse, with a market hungry for autograph and memorabilia cards. In addition to the 73 Reds jersey, Donruss also has secured a 1981 Philadelphia Phillies home jersey Rose wore on June 10, 1981 when he collected his 3,630th career hit which at the time tied him with Stan Musial on the all-time hits list.
Both jerseys are autographed by the Hit King, meaning some collectors could receive a game-used swatch with part of a signature.
Threads Baseball – scheduled for a mid-October release - will contain some of the same components that have made Donruss Threads Football so successful including Rookie Class custom nameplate letters autographed and serial numbered. Threads Baseball also will feature some first-time inserts such as Baseball Americana which highlights such American baseball icons as Rose, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan, Abbott Costello (Whos On First?), and actors such as Gary Cooper (Pride of the Yankees), John Cusack (Eight Men Out) and Burt Lancaster (Field of Dreams). Some of those will include memorabilia, an autograph or dual memorabilia/autograph cards.
With Threads Baseball, were striving to touch on all relevant aspects of the game – rookies, veterans, Hall of Famers and personalities, Ecklar says. And we believe Threads will deliver a great deal of each.
Mays and Porcello will be featured on Threads Baseball packaging.

Here are the results from a randomly selected box I recently opened ...
2008 Upper Deck Goudey baseball cards (retail blaster box)
Price: $20 (Wal-Mart)
Packs per box: 8
Cards per pack: 8
Cards in this box: 63
Base set completion: 53 of 200 (27 percent)
Duplicates: 0

Insert/short-print cards (no odds given) found: 10
-- Berk Ross Hit Parade of Champions -- 1. No. HPC16 Larry Bird.
-- Goudey Memorabilia -- 1. No. M-DL Derrek Lee game-used home jersey (with pinstripe).
-- Red Ink Mini Parallel -- 2. No. 34 Derrek Lee, No. 138 Daric Barton.
-- Yankee Stadium Legacy -- 2. No. 2,196 Allie Reynolds, No. 2,221 Joe DiMaggio.
-- Sport Royalty -- 1. No. 285 Derek Jeter.
-- Short-print -- 1. No. 202 Cal Ripken Jr.
-- 1936 Goudey Black White -- 1. No. 266 Matt Holliday.
-- Goudey Presidents -- 1. No. 231 George Washington.
Notes: This set seems to be an improvement over last year's just with the sheer variety of cards that can be found inside. ... There were 10 retired greats' basic cards in this box and six rookies -- including Chicago Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. ... The design is from the 1930s brand of the same name. ... This is a pretty strong blaster box and a fun break if you ask me -- probably a good product for someone who hasn't collected in a while and remembers what it's like when cards didn't need holographic foil stamping, super-thin super-white stock and UV coating.

And she bangs, she bangs/Oh baby When she moves, she moves/I go crazy 'Cause she looks like a flower but she stings like a bee/Like every girl in history/She bangs, she bangs ...
It had to be this way: Minor League Baseball and the career of William Hung, hopelessly intertwined, so that when you think of one, there is no escaping the other. Although it's been four years since Hung was gonged from the American Idol stage during that infamous San Francisco audition, his goofy cult star has not diminished one bit. If anything he's stronger: An off-key force of nature who is likely to appear anywhere without reason or warning; like an earthquake, or a urinary infection.
Hung, 25, quit school in 2005 and now tours full time, with visits to minor league baseball parks these days comprising a large chunk of his income. This past Saturday he was the feature attraction at Alexis Stadium, home of the Schaumburg Flyers of the Independent Northern League. I talked with William by phone on Monday, as he professed a love for minor league baseball, the Oakland Raiders, college football, and yes, ping pong. Also, we learn that "She Bangs" is no longer his favorite song. Yes, a William Hung scoop! Also a hunk of video goodness, following the jump.

yogiberra.com.
The 83-year-old Hall of Fame catcher for the New York Yankees sells plenty of autographed items, many at prices lower than you'll find elsewhere. Ironic, considering that the autographs are coming straight from him, eh?
A standard autographed baseball is $75. Considering the prices people pay for young stars such as Evan Longoria, Joba Chamberlain or Josh Hamilton these days, it's a steal. (After all, Berra has proven his place in baseball history.)
The real gems on his site, though, are the baseballs signed with Yogi-isms -- sayings like It ain't over 'til it's over and Ninety percent of the game is half mental. Of course, these baseballs take more time to sign -- and are probably in more demand because of their uniqueness -- and they are a bit more expensive. Yet, at $140, the ball is still cheaper than you would pay for a standard Yogi ball at some large dealer's Web sites.
Among the other autographed items up for grabs on the site are copies of his books (he's written three), bobbleheads, Hartland statues (the Sports Picks figures of the 1950s), jerseys, bats, caps, photographs, baseball cards and more. There are some gems to be found in the photos section as Berra and other past Yankees have signed some of the photos -- again for prices much lower than one would find elsewhere.
The most affordable Yogi autograph of the bunch? A $40 Hall of Fame plaque postcard.
And they say a nickel ain't worth a dime anymore ...

Cubs Transition into Tuesday-Thursday

The day after an inspiring 9th inning comeback, St. Louis Cardinals fans were eager for the rubber match of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. By the time the 8th inning was over, you could hear a pin drop in Busch Stadium as the Cubs took a 5-1 lead on Geovany Sotos home run, and stretched Russ Springer's 8th inning into 30-plus pitches.

After Sunday afternoons 7-1 victory, Cubs manager Lou Piniella was asked about the blown save by Kerry Wood during Saturdays thriller, and how it affected the team in game 3. "Those things happen," he said. "They happen a few times a year and the problem is you don't like 'em when they happen. We bounced back, and now we can enjoy our day off a little more."

They were about to enjoy their off day until Monday morning when the Cubs personnel turned on their TVs. They realized their shot at a World Series title became a little tougher over night. The division rival Milwaukee Brewers traded for Carston Charles Sabathia and are clearly taking a win now approach. Sabathia and Sheets were catching up on old times as they sat together at the top of the dugout, laughing and chatting through much of the game against the Rockies. That is of course after Carston Charles found some pants that fit from Prince Fielder. I wonder if management had it planned like that. Either way its a done deal and the N.L. is no steal because of it.

The nervous buzz that started to loom around the north side prompted the Cubs to immediately inquire about Rich Harden. Why would the As want to part with Harden right now? They have been waiting for this overflow of production out of Harden since 2006. They always knew he had the potential, but he could just never stay healthy much like Ben Sheets.

The Cubs are 31-10 in the friendly confines this season, and will look to begin another home winning streak before the all star break when they invite the Reds in on Tuesday night. The Cubs are 3-3 against the Reds this year, and were 8-6 against them last year.

Chicago should win, if not sweep, this series because they thrive on playing at home and are mentally tough enough to use the Sabathia trade as motivation. Lou Piniella makes this happen. Tuesday Ryan Dempster makes his 11th start at home, and the Cubs are 10-0 in his previous starts at home this season. This is coming from the guy who predicted a championship. Thats called backing it up. Though he has backed it up so far, really all that matters is the finish.

Cincinnati has scored 5.85 runs/9 in their last 10 against RHP.Harang has faced the Cubs twice this year and has surrendered an average of 4 ER in his last three starts against them (all losses.) He is 8-5 with a 4.57 in career match-ups, and is 1-6 on the road this year with a 5.20 ERA. Dempster and Harang both have an uncharacteristic era of over 6.00 in their last 3 starts.

There's a new ticket deal at GABP these days - buy 4 packs of baseball cards at the Majestic Reds Team Shop and get two free tickets to a future Reds game. I was there yesterday and decided to check it out. Here's the run-down:

- Must purchase 4 packs of baseball cards. They are more expensive at the ballpark - Topps 2008 Series 2: At store: $1.99. At Team Shop: $4.00. So, about $2 more. I did see Upper Deck 2008 Series 1 for $3 a pack.

- The tickets are for a pre-determined game. If you buy 4 packs right now, you get a pair of tickets to the Tuesday, July 22nd game against the Padres. It would have been sweet if it were any game, or if you had a choice, but not bad. Pre-determined tickets will be available for the next home stand according the to the cashier I spoke with. So, it looks like the promotion will be going on for at least a few weeks. I'm not sure when it ends.

- Even though the packs are more expensive ($4 vs. $2) you come out ahead for sure. 4 packs will run you $16 at the Team Shop if you go with the Topps, $12 with Upper Deck. The tickets you receive are View Level which would cost you $28 for the pair. That's $28 if buy at the ballpark - more if you buy online at a kiosk since fees are tacked on.

So, it's a great deal AND you get some baseball cards out of the whole thing. It pretty much hits on all cylinders for me.

Speaking of baseball card deals... I saw in the Target circular that select Topps packs are 3 for $4. Not bad! I have not been there to see which packs fall under that, but the photo in the circular was of a Topps 2008 Series 2 pack - normally $1.99 a pack.

Also... how about those Reds? 4 in a row! It's nice to see. Congrats to Edison Volquez for getting the All-Star nod. And, even through he really didn't deserve it for his season so far, I'm a bit bummed the Junior didn't get the nod.

A little while ago, Ben Henry of the Baseball Card Blog, decided to "kick the habit" of collecting. Mainly focusing on sets that were from the mid-seventies and earlier. Everything later was up for grabs supposedly. All Ben wanted in return was a few cards from the mid-seventies and earlier. I have a few of those to spare, so I e-mailed him and we arranged a blind trade.

I sent off a few cards that met the specifications and awaited my return. Ben wanted no more than 15 cards in return. I came close to that, but I forget the exact number I sent his way.

A week or so later, I received a box in the mail filled with cards. I couldn't wait to see what was in it. I spent my free time sorting the cards and now will share those results with you. Beware of doubles and memories.

That's quite a box! It's thoughtful and varied in its contents. It spans almost every year from 1978 until 2008. That's what I call variety! I feel a bit overwhelmed with the amount of White Sox cards in this box, but I am truly grateful for the experience of sorting these cards.

Thanks, Ben! I hope you enjoy the cards that I sent over. I'm sure they pale in comparison to what you sent over to me. You have made a White Sox fan very happy.

In the search for funds to close, there is an oft-overlooked source that could be right under your nose - or at least somewhere safely tucked away inside your closet.  How about that 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie baseball card? Sound silly? Its not. That baseball card has real value and can be readily sold to a collector.
But what if you did not want to part with your card or your prized PEZ collection? Could you access the equity in such items in order to buy a home? You bet you could. Be it an antique, a piece of artwork, car, collectable or any other asset.
The principle in such a transaction applies to any asset that
can be independently appraised by a third party. To make this work, you need to be careful in both documenting the value of the asset as well as documenting the funds received should you sell it. For example, lets say you have a first edition autographed copy of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote thats worth $2,000. You would first have the book appraised by an expert. Keeping
a copy of the appraisal, you could then sell the book and document the sale with a copy of the receipt and deposit the money into your bank account. Or, you could also borrow
against the value of the book.
Lenders will allow for a secured loan to be counted as legitimate funds available for closing, as long as the terms on the loan are figured into your debt ratios. That way you wont have to part with your beloved 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie baseball card or your copy of the Capote book. You can borrow against these
- as long as you can find a lender willing to give you the loan. Collectables such as baseball cards, while valuable, are much less commonly used as assets than automobiles. But they can
be just as fruitful.
So, if the lender can independently obtain a legitimate value assessment of the asset that matches up with the appraisal, then you potentially have another tool to help you fund your home purchase.

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 6/3/08 On July 12, The Grammy Foundation will honor Sir George Martin on the USC campus. It is the signature, annual “Starry Night” – a special benefit dinner and concert. Sir George is a legendary, six-time GRAMMY winner, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1996. He is best known to the world as “The Beatles” who signed them, and produced and arranged most all Beatles records. The president of the Grammy Foundation and The Recording Academy president/CEO Neil Portnow will present the award to Martin on “Starry Night.” “Throughout his legendary career, Sir George has had an impact on music and popular culture that is immeasurable,” said Portnow. “We look forward to paying tribute to a man who has had an indelible influence on generations of music lovers around the world.”

According to Grammy Foundation board chair Steve Schnur, “Sir George’s celebrated career has extended far beyond the recording studio. His is a lifetime commitment to both music and humanity, and it is only fitting that this year’s foundation leadership award honors one of the most iconic figures in music history.”

Martin is currently in pre-production with PBS and Wildheart Entertainment on the eight-part prime-time showcase series, “On The Record: The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.” This unique program traces the history of recorded music and its major impact on our popular culture. It will be hosted by Martin and narrated by two-time Academy-Award winning actor Kevin Spacey, and is slated to air on PBS nationally in fall 2010.

The star-studded line-up for “Starry Night” includes Jeff Beck, Chris Botti, Natalie Cole, Tom Jones, Dave Grusin, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, Michael McDonald, and a few surprises. The dinner chairs include Sir Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Ringo Starr, and Olivia Harrison.

Upper Deck will also continue its hair cuts cards, started in the SP release.  There will be sixteen 1-of-1 hair cuts cards in the Piece of History release.  Included in those sixteen cards are non-baseball greats such as:  Alexander Hamilton, Abraham Lincoln and Elvis Presley.  The lone baseball great inlcuded in the hair cuts cards is the one and only George Ruth.  Not a bad player to include in this subset.  For pictures of the hair cuts cards, go to the official Upper Deck site.
From my perspective, anything with both a memorabilia piece AND an auto is a top-notch collectible card.  There are several of those in this set.  There will be 50 cards (of different runs) that are included in the Franchise History Jersey Auto subset.  They key cards to look for here are Ken Griffey Jr. (#d to 25), Derek Jeter (#d to 24) and Albert Pujols (#d to 5).
The hair cut cards, the Franchise History Jersey Auto, and the one signature and three memorabilia cards per hobby box are the real attractions of this release, in my opinion.  The release itself features a decent, but not spectacular, card design.  If youre into nostalgia looks (like Artifacts), you may really like this set.  If youre into color photo shots, youre better off sticking with the Upper Deck Series I release.   All-in-all a good release for autograph and memorabilia card collectors.

I received the following email request yesterday from an avid T206 collector. Hes searching for ALL T206 baseball cards with a Howe McCormick stamp on the back of each. His quest is to reunite this long separated collection of vintage T206 baseball cards. The stamp is pictured left. Please email me at bloopsingle @ gmail.com if you come across any and Ill put you in contact with Ed. Here's his plea:

I just ran across your blog while doing a Google search of t206s. I've collected t206s for the past 20 years, and last summer, sold nearly 200 of them to concentrate only on the cards that had a rubber stamping on the back from Howe McCormick, 500 W. Main St., Gainesville, Fla. I had two in my collection at that time, and have been able to locate approx. 72 others since then, although not all have been for sale. Apparently, he was about 14 when the cards came out, and had quite a collection. Went on to fight in WWI, got married, and died, all in Gainesville. I'm just trying to locate, and when I can, buy all the card he may have had as a kid, sort of re-assembling his collection almost 100 years later. All the cards I've located so far have been either Piedmont, Old Mill or Hindu. If you have any in your collection, I would be interested in hearing from you, and most interested if you would be willing to sell.

Mortgage Confidential:
In the search for funds to close, there is an oft-overlooked source that could be right under your nose - or at least somewhere safely tucked away inside your closet.  How about that 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie baseball card? Sound silly? It's not. That baseball card has real value and can be readily sold to a collector.
But what if you did not want to part with your card or your prized PEZ collection?
Could you access the equity in such items in order to buy a home? You bet you could. Be it an antique, a piece of artwork, car, collectable or any other asset.
The principle in such a transaction applies to any asset that can be independently appraised by a third party.
To make this work, you need to be careful in both documenting the value of the asset as well as documenting the funds received should you sell it. For example, let's say you have a first edition autographed copy of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote that's worth $2,000. You would first have the book appraised by an expert. Keeping a copy of the appraisal, you could then sell the book and document the sale with a copy of the receipt and deposit the money into your bank account. Or, you could also borrow against the value of the book.

last night's contest against the Pirates, via Patrick Sullivan at Baseball Analysts, down 3-2 in the eighth and two runners on with no outs: - Manager Dusty Baker put a bunt on with (Joey) Votto at the plate.
- Votto offered and fouled off a (Damaso) Marte pitch. He offered and missed the next. He fouled off an 0-2 pitch and then struck out on Marte's fourth pitch to him.
- (Edwin) Encarnacion came to the plate and battled through an impressive at-bat, only to strike out on the eighth Marte pitch he saw.
- With two outs and (Jay) Bruce set to come to the plate, Baker sent the reigning #1 Baseball America prospect back to the dugout in favor of...wait for it...Javier Valentin. "It couldn't possibly be the Javier Valentin with the .222/.275/.286 line," you say? It was. I watched it live. Valentin grounded out to end the inning.
