The final selection for the USA Olympic basketball team was named and there were not really any surprises:
Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Jason Kidd were among the 12 players selected for the squad. Completing the team were Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Michael Redd and Deron Williams.
It was a very difficult selection process, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said during a news conference. When you have as many outstanding players as we have in this country — to select a group of 12 is obviously going to leave out a number of outstanding people.
link: US selects James, Bryant to lead Olympic basketball hopes in Beijing
The one possible weakness that other teams might exploit is the lack of three point shooters. There is Michael Redd, Kobe Bryant and possibly Carmelo Anthony to force other teams out from the zone defense. Teams will try to pack the lane with the zone defense so the outside shooting is crucial. It would be reassuring to have another Ray Allen type of shooter who can score over the zone. And yes, even a shooter like Ray Allen can go into a slump as the recent NBA playoffs showed. However, the international teams would chance being beaten from long range than with anything close to the basket. Any Lakers fan or Celtic fan will verify how effective that defense is.

Basketball headbutt loses Austrian game Ivanhoe from Austria emails:
as I live in Austria, I follow the Austrian League very closely. Last week, game 5 took place between Basket Swans Gmunden (the ULEB Cup Team who lost against Juventut, as you know) and Fürstenfeld.
In a crucial game 5, something strange happened. Fürstenfeld had posession up 1 and about 3-1/2 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. They lost the ball. Peter Hütter of Gmunden came up with the ball and headed for a fastbreak, no one near him for an uncontested dunk, but as he dunked the ball hard, the ball went through the hoop, bounced off his head and went out again. The ball never went through the net completly. Fürstenfeld gained control and hit a 3 pointer. Ball game. Thats not something that happens everyday.

Program Uses Basketball To Forge Bonds Among Kids In Troubled Regions
WASHINGTON -- Two brothers from D.C. are using the game of basketball to bring young people together in some of the world's most troubled regions.
PeacePlayers International is the brainchild of Brendan and Sean Tuohey. After both brothers played basketball in college, Sean Tuohey came up with the Peace Players idea while playing professional basketball and running coaching programs for children in Northern Ireland. Brendan Tuohey said he loved the thought of using sports to build relationships between kids that are taught to hate.
"I think everybody can understand growing up playing sports is a great way to build friends, a great way to build relationships from all sorts of backgrounds, so we're taking that concept and applying it to these conflict and post-conflict situations and using it not just as a tool to build friendships, but to build peace," he said.
PeacePlayers, formerly known as Playing for Peace, started its first program in South Africa in 2001.
"Before we went in there, people said, 'You can't go in there, you won't come out,' but they went, and not only did they come out, but they found that those kids were some of the most enthusiastic kids they'd ever been around," Brendan Tuohey said.
That enthusiasm spread as PeacePlayers opened programs in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Cyprus and New Orleans, reaching more than 45,000 children worldwide.
In South Africa, where 20 percent of the population is HIV positive, life skills and AIDS education are the biggest parts of the program. Basketball helps the children build relationships with their coaches, enabling them to discuss a subject that normally isn't openly discussed.
"(Children) come to (coaches) with really, really personal problems, and they tell them problems they cannot tell to their parents," said Sizwile Ximba, a PeacePlayers regional manager.
That bond develops because local people are coaching and running the programs, giving the community a sense of ownership, which helps overcome barriers. In Northern Ireland, for example, Protestant and Catholic children are taught who you pray with is who you play with. That's changing thanks to PeacePlayers.
"They're old enough where they can play the sport but young enough, for the most part they haven't formed permanent opinions about one another," Brendan Tuohey said.
The PeacePlayers concept extends into other parts of the world where hatred has kept children apart. In the Middle East, Israeli and Arab children would not be as likely to interact if not for the PeacePlayers program.
PeacePlayers already has built more than 60 basketball courts in South Africa alone. Sean Tuohey is taking some time away from the organization to write a book about his experiences around the world.

Before joining the college ranks, Hughey served as the assistant varsity boys coach at W.J. Keenan High School in Columbia, S.C., from 2001-04. Keenan participated in the playoffs in each of his three years on staff and was one of the Palmetto State's most successful teams during his tenure. At Keenan, Hughey helped develop Brandon Trapp and Thurman Zimmerman, both of whom went on to play at South Carolina State and Alexander Harper, who competed collegiately at Virginia Commonwealth. Hughey went to Keenan after one season in the same role at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy, also in Columbia, in 2000-01. His first coaching job came at Alcorn Middle School, where he served as head boys basketball coach from 1996-98. Hughey left coaching to join the concrete business before returning to the court at C.A. Johnson in 2000. Hughey attended C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy and was a three-year letterwinner as a forward on the basketball team. The school won the South Carolina state high school championship in his senior season of 1989. He also was a three-year letterwinner on the football team, on which he played quarterback, and a three-year cross country letterwinner as well. "I am very blessed by the opportunity that Joi gave me to join her staff," Hughey said. "I knew after 20 minutes of speaking with her that I could work well with her for many years. My goal every day is to do better than the day before and I apply that to every aspect of my life. I eat, sleep and drink the game of basketball and I am looking forward to showing that every day in how I do my job." Hughey spent three years attending South Carolina State before earning his bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Limestone College in December 2006. He is married to the former Alethea Barnes, a 1994 graduate of the University of South Carolina. He has two daughters, Sanabarabara (15) and Rhonda (8). I finally found a few hours to enjoy Madrid. So far I have only been running around between gyms, metro stations and restaurants. I have been to a lot of cities in Europe in the past three months but Madrid is by far the best city when it comes to city life. Last night, when we were on our way to the Euroleague Gala (thanks for the invitation - it was a great show), I saw streets filled with hundreds of tourists, locals and basketball fans.
Today I took a little tour - It had to be little, because I was REALLY exhausted from the last few days, as you can see in this picture.

The ADs are desperate to lift the leagues NCAA Tournament profile but I am not sure this will get it done.
Despite being #1 in the RPI, the ACC only had four teams in the NCAA Tournament. This concerns the league ADs to the point they are discussing expanding the basketball schedule to 18 games.
According to Jerry Palm of CollegeRPI.com it will actually hurt the league RPI since it lowers the overall record of the league. It also should be noted that since the league is seen as weak right now, two more games within conference is not going to bolster the NCAA case much.
Seth Greenberg, who is pretty much desperate to do something as long as it gets his team off the bubble thinks the coaches need an open mind on the issue despite the fact they all opposed it last year when it was broached. I think the chances of Roy and K agreeing to this are between slim and none which probably stands to effectively kill it.
Speaking for myself, I am a traditionalist and would love to see a full round robin but there is no way they are going to switch to a 22 game conference schedule. I am also not sure adding to more games, while closer to the round robin, is worth it.
Then again if they could simply have UNC play the other seven 1980s ACC schools twice and only have the Heels play BC, Miami, VT and FSU once each then I would be all for the ACC expanding to 18 games.

The Australian National Basketball League (ANBL) has fined the New Zealand Breakers club $A5000 ($NZ6083) for breaching its rules regarding approaches to contracted players.
The fine for `subverting the player transfer rules' comes after the Breakers held discussions with players CJ Bruton and Dillon Boucher, despite the pair still having contracts with the Brisbane Bullets.
A NBL interim chief executive officer Chuck Harmison today said the decision to fine the Breakers was a difficult one given the complex issues surrounding the breach.
"Quite clearly, the on-going sale of the Bullets license and discussions held with the contracted team members by the Brisbane ownership led to a certain amount of confusion amongst the other clubs as to the process they needed to undertake to negotiate with Bullets players," Harmison said.
"These extenuating circumstances have duly been taken into account, as has the Breakers full compliance with the league's investigation of this matter. The fact remains, however, that a breach of our rules has taken place, even if it was inadvertent. Our rules clearly state that you can only approach a player who is already under contract with the permission of their current club. New Zealand, to their credit, has admitted their infraction in the matter of Boucher and Bruton but the league office is left with no alternative but to fine the Breakers."
The Breakers last month announced they had signed Australian international Bruton and former Tall Black Boucher.
The club stressed that contract details were still being finalised and were subject to ANBL approval, but Breakers general manager Richard Clarke was ecstatic.
"It's great to have Dillon come back to the club and we've secured two excellent multi-faceted guys, who are genuinely keen to help take the team to new heights and win a championship with the club," Clarke said.
Harmison said the ANBL was continuing to look for evidence of any similar breaches regarding other players who held contracts with the Bullets.
"Certainly there has been significant media speculation about other clubs having negotiated with players under contract with the Bullets, and we are investigating these currently. If any hard evidence of similar breaches is found, sanctions will be imposed.
