Many things should never be compromised; things such as honesty, truthfulness, and compassion. These are basic virtues, and when they are absent, disagreements result. When virtue is absent, a solution will be difficult to find. For example; if one or more parties are greedy, hateful, or can’t see the situation clearly, polarization will be the outcome.
Seeing clearly is a rarity. Our vision is usually skewed by an agenda of some kind, which involves something we either want badly, or already have and want to hold onto. If it weren’t for desire, conflict would be the rarity, instead of seeing clearly being the rarity.
Current divisive issues are good examples of strong wanting – wanting things to go our way. Typically, we see only one side of a disagreement simply because of the strength of our convictions. The question is; are our convictions truths, or merely opinions? If we see them as truths, how can compromise be possible?
Therefore, in order to compromise, we must sort out what is opinion and what is truth, and whether or not truth is something that we can define. Is truth static, that is; is our truth something we can count on regardless of circumstances? If it is, then how can there be disagreements, unless, of course, someone else’s truth is different from ours! Then, we must question truth itself.
Are there different truths? Perhaps we are deceiving ourselves if we think that truth is a commodity we can capture for ourselves, something not always moving. The truth is; truth is slippery! Perhaps the truth doesn’t exist as a concept, and only exists in the circumstances of each moment.
A blanket disavowal or acceptance of something as a truth cannot react to an immediate situation. What is happening at this very moment will always beg for clear action outside the parameters of concepts and conclusions. If we are shackled by our truths and convictions, by our past conditionings that are no more than our thoughts and opinions, we will never be able to react appropriately. Seeing clearly in each moment, moment to moment, might just be the ultimate truth, but that’s why it’s so elusive; it’s ever changing. You cannot lay a hand on it.
Right action results from seeing each moment clearly, and each moment is different from the last. Therefore, each moment requires its own type of action. Living in the past or considering the future takes us out of the moment and catapults us back or forward into ideas, and ideas are much too slow to react in the immediacy of the moment. Then we find ourselves paralyzed, confused by concepts because thought is always after the fact; only truth is immediately in sync with the fact.
When we are unable to live each moment, laws and rules become necessary. Natural virtue; compassion, honesty, and truthfulness arise in each moment, but when we are not in that moment with them, when we are caught in our mind games of thought and concept, virtue becomes lost. Then we need decrees and commandments, because we are too confused and paralyzed to react from our hearts. Unlawful acts never come from the heart, always from confused minds; minds that are neurotic and obsessed because the criminal mind believes in thought, and believes that thought is the truth, that thought is actually himself or herself, and their actions always follow the dictates of these thoughts.
All thought is dead. Thought happens after the immediacy of each moment and is merely a record – not the creativity of aware beings. Creativity is too alive, too engaged to stop long enough to dwell in the past in thought, which is much too slow. Thought is not only slow, but thought is the past, and the past projected into the future. Therefore, thought is never real, thought is unreal, it distances you from the reality of the moment, even though this is where most of us spend our entire existence; lost in thought.
This explains why compromise and finding the middle ground is so difficult; we are caught in concrete cement jackets of concept and thought without any possibility of a live interchange of immediate experience. We talk at each other instead of with each other, and instead of finding new creative solutions; we fight over things that have happened years ago, never seeing that this is all in the past and that things have changed. We do this because we believe in our thoughts, no different from the criminal, and because of this, we are capable of neurotic activity. It only depends upon how far we are pushed or how much we want things to go our way.
Look at the world; Christians fighting Muslims, Hindus fighting Buddhists, and all because of concrete opinions about who’s ideas are truth, or who will dominate a piece of geography. God forbid that someone who believes other than us would move in next door!
Would the world be a better place without strong religious beliefs that only seem to separate us? I don’t know. Is religion what keeps people in line, or do people keep in line because of a basic human element, a natural virtue that separates us from the animals? Does religion therefore only divide us and cause bloodshed? These are questions that any free thinker should ask, because when we are in the moment, without the burden of the past or fear of the future, none of these concepts exist. In the moment, religion doesn’t exist. Religion is only an afterthought, after the ineffable is touched for a moment.
Touching that which is called God, or Reality, or Universal Truth, or whatever we wish to call it can never be done outside of this precious moment. If we are caught up in our concepts and thoughts, we will never experience the only thing that truly changes lives.
The possibility of this experience belongs to all of us, and if we ever are able to understand this universality, the world will become a more peaceful place. It all begins with each of us finding the middle ground.

Walking into Columbia's latest barbecue addition is a bit like stumbling into the set of some sort of rural remix of Alice in Wonderland. It's looks like an inside-out barnyard picnic with upside-down umbrellas and a full bar. They could label their beverages "Drink Me, Y'all!"

Lampert's Plush Pig BBQ opened off Grindstone Parkway, next to Fuddruckers and Papa Murphy's. Columbia's Plush Pig is their second storefront, migrating from St. Louis County. Their website has a pretty amusing story chronically a family history that begins with a modest auto-parts empire and ends in smoke.

With it's close vicinity to Buckingham's (but with better visibility), the Pig offers a unique menu that successfully sets it apart from Columbia's existing peddlers of smoked-meat. Where else can you get (excellent) fried pickles as a side item? Or a chicken and brisket sandwich (The Big Jake)?

The website says they believe in "doing five or so items well," a philosophy I can appreciate. Unfortunately, yesterday, the chicken was not one of them. It was dry and lightly burnt. Dunking it in sauce couldn't salvage it.

But the brisket... oh, the brisket! That's a whole different story. The brisket was absolutely amazing - soft, moist and lightly sauced. It's sliced into strips which I believe could have melted on my tongue.

Another thing they do right is their sauces. They don't lay it on thick; they let you do that at your table. Although this may be the cause of my dry chicken, the light sauce works for the brisket. It gives you a chance to choose from their three sauces on your table, two of which are in disguise in red and yellow bottles which I initially mistook for ketchup and mustard. (Incidentally, spicy barbecue sauce on fries, though not what I intended, is quite good.)

Normally, I opt for the standard barbecue sauce. Theirs is interesting, with a slightly vinaigrette flavor. But when I discovered the spicy and the honey, I quickly changed tactics. The spicy has a pretty good kick. The honey is on par with the brisket for deliciousness. Combined, they're unstoppable.

The side items they do lay on thick. I've been described as a human trash compactor, but it would have taken extra willpower for me to polish off all of my fries (though I did partially fill up on fried pickles stolen from my wife).

Service was sketchy. Hopefully that will turn around after they become more established. I'm holding my opinion until I've gotten a second visit in.

Although Feijen broke and won his next home rack, Orcullo was flawless as he completed a combination shot in the 13th to extend his lead to 10-3. Dennis Orcullos foul on the break allowed world No. 2 Niels Feijen to win the 14th and then took another to cut the gap down to 10-5. But it was too little too late as Orcollo left the crowd in awe with his brilliant shot-making ability and ball positioning. He followed a successful 1/9 combination shot with another 4/9 to go within a rack from the victory. And when the Robocop cleared the table to win the 18th, he was greeted with a laud cheer from his fans.

I recently moved over a hundred miles from a town I lived in for the last 24 years.  There I had my favorite place and places to play pool. Most of them were bars where they have two to four billiards tables and one or more league teams to play on.  To me, a place that has a name referencing pool and billiards, for instance, Billiards Emporium, Bit OBilliards or the Billiard Room (I made these up just to give you an idea), and has six or more billiards tables is a Billiards Parlor.  When I moved here to Pueblo, Colorado over a year ago I saw one of these places while driving in my car, it had a huge banner announcing Saturday Pool Tournaments. So of course one Saturday I went down there and joined in the tournament to check the place out and check out the action.
It was very laid back and the people were nice and friendly and serious pool players.  Most of them, I noticed, did not drink alcohol right away but waited until the tournament was about half way through before partaking. They were very good about going over the particular billiards rules and patient with anyone not familiar with them. It was definitely a competitive atmosphere where people are there to put there best skills to the test and not just to get drunk and play pool. Although a good time is had by all because we are all participating in our favorite sport.
In summary, its a place where the sights, sounds and people are familiar and welcoming.  The sight of the billiards tables all lined up in rows, the sound of the breaking of the pool balls, and everyone greeting each other and exchanging tips and tricks and joking around and razzing each other about past blunders or recalling past victories and amazing shots.  The interaction among billiards pool players is really cool and I am really glad to be one of them! After going a few times I noticed that just like most places, the people there all know each other and now they know me too, which makes it my favorite Billiards Parlor.

I don't get around to mentioning every match-up as it happens, so this entry is an attempt to catch up on some of them. After all, it is supposed to be a Diary, right?

1. Yesterday I shot a couple of sets with El Maestro Tony Sorto at Family Billiards in Oceanside. They just installed some new cloth and tightened up the pockets on a few tables. I was most interested in trying my draw stroke on new cloth to compare the results I've been getting on my table. In a word: Wow! Now I'm going to have to replace the cloth on my table. Another reason for doing this: I just played (again) the John Schmidt DVD showing his run of 245 balls in straight pool. He mentions new cloth as being a benefit for higher runs. That clinched it. In any case, back to yesterday's match-up: I won 7-2 playing the US Amateur format (9 ball and 8 ball), and as I was rubbing his nose in it, behaving like a poor winner (hey, I'm from Philly... that's what we do), he reminded me that he won the first set of 9-ball only, by the same score, 7-2. Amazingly, I didn't remember that so readily. Funny how the mind works, easily forgetting the negatives. I'm sure that's a good thing, a survival tactic.

2. On June 19, Malve showed up for the first time in about 6 months. It was late, after I had just put in a strong practice session of 3+ hours, so I was tired, but I didn't want to wus out, and used it as an opportunity to stretch my endurance. We played a short race to 5 in 9-ball. It seemed that neither of us were playing that great, but he got ahead 3-0 before I woke, got focused, and made it hill-hill, whereupon he totally lucked in a round-the-table wild ball which combo-ed in the 9 ball. "The balls roll funny for everybody, kiddo" (Fast Eddie Felson, The Color of Money).

3. On June 14, one of the legends of pool stopped by FastMikie's Fun House on his way to the US Open (golf) tournament at Torrey Pines, just a mile or two down the road. Jay Helfert is a well known pool tournament director and poker player and pool shooter, and a regular on the AZBilliards.com forum, where we met. He shows up here early in the morning, and I'm not really awake yet, and haven't had any breakfast, so I just watch him hit balls while we talk. He's banking like a madman, sinking them from everywhere, and he's got me thinking that I'm in for a major lesson in humility when we get around to playing after he returns from the golf tournament. I call in the reserves: El Maestro, figuring that after Jay puts me down that Tony will put him down. But it turned out better than I thought, and I won 7-4 in US Amateur format (8 and 9 ball games). Jay got off to a strong start 3-0, but I won the next 7 out of 8 games for the win. And I had a couple of really nice games of 8 ball at the finish, pure surgical performances. Loved it. So I didn't need Tony for backup, and we just played some Honduran rotation for a while, and then Jay gave me some lessons in One Pocket, which I never play. Jay showed me his photo and story in the great One Pocket book "Shots, Moves and Strategies, as taught by the game's greatest players" (see page 71).

4. I might be missing a match or two here, so if it's one I lost to you, please remind me. I have a tendency to forget the losses.

5-time U. S. Open 9-Ball Champion Earl Strickland is without a doubt the most controversial personality in the sport of pool. However, like other professional sports jackasses like John McEnroe and Terrell Owens, he makes for good TV. Earl just cant help himself. Even when he tries to hide from the limelight, he seems to draw more attention to his moronic behavior. Whether you love him or hate him, one thing is for sure, hell always give you something to talk about and this match is no exception.
On the other hand, Ralf Souquet is the complete opposite to the antics of Strickland. Souquet is a consummate professional, playing focused and methodical.

As of June 13, 2008 Stephanie Tang's photographer ID is no longer in circulation. Her ID, 827, was retired today as she left through the studio doors one last time. The Photographer ID is a number that is unique to each photographer in the Photo Dept. For the last month and a half team members have been at a loss with the ever so rapidly approaching departure of Mrs. Tang.

We consider ourselves blessed to have worked with her during her 5 year tenure at Zappos and none of us were ready to see her leave. Sure, we are all lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known and worked with Stephanie. She paved the way for so many of us and we are all very thankful for what she has done. When you work with someone like Stephanie you realize that the Zappos.com Core Values are more than a mission, they are a lifestyle. She embodied each and every single Core Value and when you work with someone of this caliber it is hard to say goodbye!
