Musicals have come a long way over the years. There was a period of time when they werent even worth watching. That period of time has long since passed, though. The film begins in Detroit, Michigan in 1962, as an amateur African-American girl group known as The Dreamettes enter a talent competition at the Detroit Theater. Backstage, the three girls — full-figured lead singer Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), Deena Jones (Beyoncé Knowles) and Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose) — meet Curtis Taylor, Jr., an ambitious Cadillac dealer with plans of breaking into the music business. Placing himself as their manager, Curtis arranges for the Dreamettes to tour as backup for a regional RB star, James Early (Eddie Murphy). The tour takes the company - also including Effies songwriting brother C.C. (Keith Robinson) and Jimmys manager Marty (Danny Glover) - across the country on the chitlin circuit.
Hoping to help Jimmy and the girls cross over to mainstream audiences, Curtis starts his own record label, Rainbow Records (The Sound of Tomorrow), out of his car dealerships office, and makes C.C. his head songwriter. However, when Rainbows first single fails after a white pop group releases a cover version, Curtis and his sidekick Wayne (Hinton Battle) turn to payola. By paying the right people, Curtis manages to get Jimmy and the Dreamettes to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and into a headlining gig at the Apollo Theater. Offstage, Effie is quickly becoming infatuated with the slick-talking Curtis, and Jimmy - a married man - begins an adulterous affair with Lorrell, who becomes equally as lovesick as Effie.
Marty grows weary of Curtis plans to make Jimmys image and sound more pop-friendly, to the point that he walks out on Jimmy, both his client and best friend. However, when Curtis finds that he cannot completely remake Jimmy Early into a pop act, he shifts his attention back to the Dreamettes. Feeling that Effies voice is too and her figure too large to attract white audiences, Curtis appoints the slimmer Deena as the lead singer of the Dreamettes.
With the aid of new songs and a new more glamorous image, Curtis and C.C. transform The Dreamettes into The Dreams, a top selling pop act whose popularity comes to rival that of The Beatles by 1965. However, the betrayed Effie does not take kindly to being reduced to Deenas backup, and begins acting out, becoming even more unruly when Curtiss affections also turn towards Deena. When Effie, feeling ill, does not turn up to rehearse for the Dreams debut in Las Vegas on New Years Eve 1966, Curtis replaces Effie with his secretary, Michelle Morris (Sharon Leal). Effie, who has just learned she is pregnant, arrives at the Caesars Palace venue just as Michelle does, and after a nearly violent argument, finds herself without her group, without her brother, and without Curtis.
Eight years later, in 1973, Effie has become a depressed but caring welfare mother, and her career in music is over. She and her seven-year-old daughter Magic live alone in the burnt-out inner city of Detroit with only Effies father Ronald to look in on them. On the other hand, Rainbow Records has moved to Los Angeles, where it prospers with Deena Jones the Dreams and many other pop acts. Wanting to expand his empire into film, Curtis plans to have an unwilling Deena, now his wife, star in a blaxploitation musical version of Cleopatra. Hoping that the struggling film project will never get off the ground, Deena begins secretly meeting with other studios to take a part in another film.
Though still part of the Rainbow roster, Jimmy Earlys stardom has long faded, and Curtis has little interest in revitalizing his career. Unsatisfied with both his wife Melba and his long-term mistress Lorrell, Jimmy turns to drugs for affection. Meanwhile, C.C. continues to reach out to Effie, who stubbornly ignores the letters and money he sends. Eventually, Effie swallows her pride and, with Marty as her manager, returns to singing and secures gigs at a small Detroit club.
In 1974, Rainbow Records hosts a tenth anniversary TV special. Midway through his set, Jimmy decides that he cannot sing any more sad songs, so he breaks down onstage and launches into a wild James Brown-type funk number. The audience seems to love it, but the act goes too far during the end when Jimmy drops his pants on live television. Curtis consequently terminates Jimmys contract, and Lorrell ends the eight-year affair. Some time later, Jimmy is found dead at an L.A. hotel, apparently the result of a heroin overdose.
C.C., angry over Jimmys death and frustrated with Curtiss tampering with his music, walks out on Rainbow Records and heads back to Detroit and to Effie. The two siblings reconcile and work together to produce Effies comeback single, One Night Only. Just as the record begins gaining radio play in Detroit, however, Curtis strikes. Using payola, he forces radio DJs to play a disco cover of One Night Only by Deena Jones the Dreams instead of Effies original, and the Dreams version becomes a major hit in early 1975.
Curtis has also learned of Deenas covert meetings with other film producers and asserts his control over his wife. Rebuffed, Deena sneaks into Curtis office, where she discovers evidence of Curtis payola schemes and finds a copy of Effies version of One Night Only. She calls Effie and C.C., who arrive at the Rainbow offices with Marty and a lawyer. As Deena and Effie reconcile, Curtis works out a deal with the lawyer to avoid being reported to the FBI for payola: Rainbow Records will fund a new label for C.C., which will allow Effies record national distribution. Curtis then confronts Deena, only to find that Effies victory has inspired Deena to leave him and make it on her own.
As a result, Deena Jones the Dreams give a farewell performance at the Detroit Theater. At the conclusion of the concert, Effie joins Deena, Lorrell, and Michelle onstage and the reunited Dreams give one final performance of their signature song, , with Effie singing lead. As the concert ends, Curtis notices Magic in the front row and realizes that he is the girls father. The final scene shows Deena, Effie, Lorrell, and Michelle finish the final song as the room fades to black and the credits roll.
REVIEW:
Ive seen many a musical in my day, and this is up there with the best of them. not in the top tier, but definitely worth of mentioning. As with any good musical, the music makes the story. However, as a movie, Im not sure I agree with the emphasis taken away from the music.
Also, and this may be something that occurs in the actual musical, it seems like the songs lose some of their memorability once things shift into the 70s. Im assuming that would bea different act if this was in a theater.
Jennifer Hudson blows everyone away with her performance. No wodner she won the Oscar. Hard to belive that this role could have gone to Fantasia or Raven Symone, huh? Something tells me, they wouldnt have had the same impact, especially Fantasia.
Beyonce isnt half bad either, but you know she had to check her ego at the door to play second fiddle to someone who didnt even finish in the top 5 of American Idol! Of course, Im glad shes gone back to eating and isnt the twig she became for this movie.
The first time I can remember seeing Eddie Murphy was a clip of Saturday Night Live when he was impersonating James Brown. For many of his earlier performances he seems to go back to those days. Am I the only thats noticed how Eddie Murphys face is elongated these days. He looks more like Arsenio Hall now!
Keith Robinson is supposed to be the Smokey Robinson character in all this. You know, the songwriter. He does an excellent job. With all the hype surrounding everyone else, you totally forget about him.
Jamie Foxx is totally believable as a no good, dirty, greaseball manager/car dealer. I wasnt sure what to think of that at first except that they just wanted to get a big name in that role and he was fresh off of the success of Ray.
There are a few thigns I would have done different when it comes to this movie, but still its pretty good.

As a comic book fan and an avid movie buff, I must admit that even I was somewhat skeptical about the possibility of a franchise when I first heard about it several years ago. I mean, comic book movies had appeared to have seen better days, and vampire movies didn’t seem to have much of a life in terms of a franchise, so chances of this little known Marvel Comics character finding success in both film types seemed slim to none. But my skepticism was proven wrong with the surprising successes enjoyed by the first two films in the franchise “Blade” and “Blade 2”. With the first film audiences were provided with a terrific introduction into the Blade mythos, one that differed from the comic book it was based upon, but in a very exciting way. Blade 2 expanded greatly upon the war between Blade and the vampires that was depicted in the first film, and raised the bar for the franchise, and other monster movies that would follow. So, when New Line Cinema released the supposed final chapter in the ‘Blade’ saga with “Blade: Trinity”, written and directed this time by series writer David S. Goyer, and starring once again Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson, I was truly excited to see just what was in store for us fans in this final chapter to what has been an exciting series thus far.
Blade: Trinity finds Blade (Wesley Snipes) being constantly pursued by the authorities, and Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) trying to warn him that he will not always be around to watch his back, and that Blade should find some help in this continuing war with the vampires. But before any help could be found, Whistler is killed in a raid on Blades headquarters. With his mentor dead, and he himself in custody, it seems all hope is lost for humanity and that the vampires will now reign supreme, especially since they have resurrected the vampire that started it all, Dracula. Hearing that Blade has been captured, an underground group of vampire hunters known as the Nighstalkers, mount a rescue to free Blade, in hopes that he will lead them into battle against Dracula and his minions. Leading the rescue is Abigail (Jessica Biel), Whistlers daughter, and Hannibal King (Ryan Reynolds), a former vampire turned vampire hunter. After successfully freeing Blade from custody, the Nighstalkers try to convince Blade to join them, but he declines, that is until he is made aware that Dracula has been unleashed upon the world. With time running out Blade must join forces with this young group of Nightstalkers and rid the world of Dracula’s evil once and for all.
One outstanding part of this trilogy is the fact that not only did Wesley Snipes reprise his role of Blade for each installment (an important key to a franchises continued success), but writer David S. Goyer (, and Blade 2) came back to not only write this final chapter in the trilogy, but also direct it. This seems especially fitting, since David S. Goyer wrote all of the films in this franchise, allowing him to direct the series’ final chapter made perfect sense, due to the fact that aside from Wesley Snipes, no one probably knows this character better. As a first-time director, Goyer showed a surprising amount of visual flair, and even managed to stay true to the tone set forth in the previous two installments. This is surprising since most new directors seem like they always want to make a name for themselves by imbuing a film with as much of their own personal sense of style as possible, and if that messes with a franchises appearance, so be it. Perhaps because Goyer has been around the ‘Blade’ franchise the entire time he didn’t want to risk being the one to mess it up by trying new things, so he opted to keep the tone the same throughout the series, a move that was appreciated by this fan in particular. It’s always nice to have a series of films not shift direction or tone every time a new director comes onboard (case in point look what happened to the tone of the ‘Batman’ movies from 1989 through 1997), not to mention it makes for a more entertaining and consistent movie experience when you watch all the films back-to-back.
The acting in this film is great, the new additions to the series added a lot of fun moments, introduced new conflict, and gave audiences the ultimate vampire villain for Blade to face. Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel really shined in this movie. Reynolds’ brand of humor was a welcome addition and fit in perfectly with the sarcastic sense of humor that had been established by Whistler in the previous film. Parker Posey and WWEs Triple H, also turned in solidly entertaining performances as Draculas two main goons, and Dominic Purcell was very good as a much more modernized, yet still just as menacing Dracula.
The special effects work in this film is great, and were by far the best in the franchise. The moment when Dracula changes into his monstrous form, was both an interesting, and surprising twist to the character, and visually exciting to see. I really appreciated that the marketing campaign for “Blade: Trinity” didn’t ruin the monstrous reveal by including it in the previews, so often are these moments in movies ruined by the trailers, that it was nice to be surprised by that moment in the movie.
When all is said and done, if “Blade: Trinity” is truly the final installment in the franchise, and evidence definitely points in that direction, then this was an excellent final chapter to the series. If you enjoyed the first two movies in the series, then there is no reason you should not see “Blade: Trinity”, granted it didn’t do as well in theaters, but that didn’t mean that the movie was any less entertaining. I would say it was definitely better than the first film, and probably rivaled the second movie, so give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

Ok, I got to admit the place sucks! Oops let me re-phrase. The place sucks for everyone who is not a photographer. Still few eyebrows raised? mmmm.. I would re-re-phrase. The place sucks for those who are not photographers and who make the terrible mistake of hiring a guide. Guided tour is what everyone tells you to go for when in Hampi. is generally comprised of that group of people who havent been there but have a lot about it. The guide takes you around the place, tells you something boring and mostly fake about the pretty stony statues and structures, strips you from any pleasure you could have got from the little aesthetic sense you have, and worst of all - you feel like being stuck in a history excursion from school.
Fortunately, we were a smart group. Apart from the smartest kid in our gang, who was busy taking notes from the guides fake gyan, we all were convinced that we need to end the educational tour. Hence: Exit Guide. Enter Beer. . Enter fun! Enter running after firangi n desi babes (not fun) and the best part: Enter Mango Tree! If you went to Hampi without visitng Mango Tree, you have literally wasted your entire time and money. Whats so good about MT? First of all the name: its exotic! Then, the awesome ambience, you must have guessed that it is a restaurant. A restaurant built in the design of terrace farms. There are steps on the side of a hill on which tables are laid overlooking the river and the entire landscape from east to west. Though I didnt like the food much, paneer pakoras and Chocolate milkshake were superb. Combo of MT and DumbC is addictive. I still miss resting on the hillside with an amazing view in front n non-stop playing dumb charades.
The first day got over in a flash and we were back to the hotel to take showers n relax. I had to leave in the morning next day to catch a train from bangalore next day. Half an hour before the departure of the night bus to bangalore we found out that the bus scheduled in morning are like those horrible state buses in which spending 8 hours would be the biggest torture. So we rushed to the bus depot, got a seat for me, and I was all set to go. The smartest kid (same one) came up with an idea that I can cancel my train and instead take a flight with pooling the same amount that I was spending in train and the rich kids from Citi and Pune funding the rest. The smart idea caught everyones attention. But my ego couldnt say yes.
For Rescue came an idea from Sholay! Yups! The Brilliant educational film. The movie buff amongst us came up with the idea of tossing a coin to decide whether I stay or go. Everyone agreed. Coin was spinned. And I was to stay. For few moments, I thought those crazy chaps were just kidding me. But they were all serious! I still smile when I think of that moment. I stayed. And every minute of the entire trip was totally worth it. I m so glad that I m lucky with coins. Else I would have not forgiven myself for ditching the trip in middle.
Next day was even more fun, with trek to the highest point in hampi, more of dumbC, trying stupid maneuvers in swimming pool of the hotel, and then an adventurous journey to Badami. To reach Badami we boarded a bus to reach some tongue-twister named town from where we were to take another bus to Hampi. By the time we reached the mid-way town, it was too late (9 at night) for buses and too late to get food and to late to hunt for rest place. Coz, we were in country side, and people there still follow the folk-sayings (early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise)! So, we were all standing on the roadside, tired and bewildered. The photographers amongst us, who just loved Hampi, were trying their best not to get hit by us by going around and asking for help. Luckily, we got a taxi to drop us to Badami, which we reach at 12 in the night. We got lucky again and got decent rooms, but most importantly we got food!
I hadnt slept (really) from 3 nights (not 2 :P) so when I was told about 5 oclock morning trip to some junk temples built some billions years ago by some other boring people, I was too tired to respond. So half of the cool gang didnt go to that another boring place, and the rest half of smart people went. I remember the name of that place though - it was Peddiakkal (dunno if I spelled it right). I was told later that there were erotic sculptures in those temples, which made me repent a little for not going but what the heck, nothing compares to Khajaraho.
At humanly hour, on the third day, we went to see caves and temple in Badami which were quite good. More of monkeying around and DumbC happened. After all that, we were too tired and too happy to think or act clearly. Yet, we managed to play cards till 11:30 at night in the train while coming back to Bangalore.
BTW, I didnt mention above, but the two gultis in the trip also extended their trip from 2 to 3 days. After that the guy from Pune also extended his trip for few hours by canceling his train ticket and taking a late houred bus. So the lesson learnt is: Impulsive trips are the bestest and dont hesitate to cancel and re-book your tickets. Its worth all the fun and masti you get in return. Second lesson: Doesnt matter where you go, as long as the people with you are travel-freaks like yourself.

Villainous pirates have captured a merchant ship and its crew. Looting the cargo isn't enough for them. They tie the crew to a mast, lay down a trail of powder encircling them, and run the powder trail into the ship's magazine. After evacuating the ship, a pirate lights the powder, jumps overboard, and swims to the boats that are rowing off to a safe distance. Soon the ship explodes in a series of blasts, scattering the ship's timbers. Somehow, two men survive. One (Douglas Fairbanks) is practically unharmed, and helps the other ashore to an island. Alas, the wounded one doesn't have time for much more than final words. He gives a signet ring to the unharmed man, and breathes his last. The sole survivor buries the body his father, we learn and carves a message on a piece of wreckage, vowing justice and vengeance. Meanwhile, a few of the pirates rowed ashore, to hide the best part of their treasure. The captain (Anders Randolf) suggests to an accomplice that dead men tell no tales, and opens a bag with enough pistols for each of the others on the treasure-hiding mission. But the survivor, who later calls himself the Black Pirate, walks toward the party of pirates, and offers to join them. They demand to know his "qualeefeecations". He challenges their best to a duel. The pirates are impressed, but they want more than fancy sword-play. Fairbanks claims he can capture their next victim ship all by himself. One of the pirates, the villainous lieutenant (Sam de Grasse), is skpetical, but one-armed MacTavish (Donald Crisp) is impressed by the Black Pirate and convinces the other pirates to see what the Black Pirate can do. With cleverness and amazing acrobatics, the Black Pirate succeeds in taking the merchant ship. The pirates discover that, in addition to rich treasure, there is a young woman (Billie Dove) aboard. Several pirates draw for her, and the lieutenant wins. But before he can harm her, the Black Pirate persuades the other pirates that she is a princess, and that they can win much greater loot by holding her for ransom. They kept the fine merchant ship, and sent the merchant crew away on the pirates' ship to demand the ransom. Will the merchant crew return in time to ransom the princess? Will the Black Pirate bring the pirates to justice? Albert Parker directed; the directing looks unrefined by modern standards, but it was good for its era. Douglas Fairbanks wrote the story, and Jack Cunningham turned it into a screenplay. It's simplistic, and not much more than an excuse to carry the film from one action scene to the next. But that's enough the action is the heart of the movie. Besides the action, an attraction of the film was its use of two-strip Technicolor Process it was the third shot entirely that way. It was shot with a camera containing a beam-splitter that exposed two frames of film at once, each with a color filter. Alternating frames were printed onto two extra-thin strips of film, each toned to a color corresponding with the filter, after which the stripes were cemented together. It was a trouble-prone system, since the layers sometimes separated or puckered. To avoid the troubles of primitive film, our screening was a DVD made from a restored print. The DVD had a problem of its own, that it played too fast, making motion look choppy a lot of the time. The two-strip process produced very good skin tones, but wasn't much good for sea or sky. To get those right took considerable special effects effort, and they still weren't quite right. The overall look was meant to look like a painting from the pirate era, with muted colors. Fairbanks had hired an art expert to get the look right. It looked strange at first, but our minds quickly got used to the effect. The stunts in the film were very impressive particularly since Fairbanks did all his own stunts, without the help of special effects. The effects that were used the ship explosion at the beginning, for example were good even by today's standards, and amazing for the era. The acting followed the conventions of silent film. Movements were overacted much of the time, and frequently gestures were used to convey dialogue that, realistically, would have been spoken. Within those conventions, all of the acting was very good with extra credit to Fairbanks for the stunt work.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are reuniting for an as-yet-untitled comedy project about Sherlock Holmes.The movie would feature Cohen as the master detective and Ferrell as his assistant, Dr. Watson. Its being written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) and produced by Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller, who previously produced Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, in which the actors costarred. Just the idea of Sacha and Will as Sherlock Holmes and Watson makes us laugh, Columbia Pictures copresident Matt Tolmach said in Variety. At NewsBlaze Prarie Miller writes, "Setting the record straight from the start, he (Haynes) emphatically tags the seeming countrified high plains drifter with a hillbilly twang, and of famously clouded origins - born Robert Allen Zimmerman and the son of a Jewish Minnesota shopkeeper - as poet, prophet, outlaw and, yes, fake. And the filmmaker's disappointment in Dylan's downward metamorphosis from political idealist to cynic, egotist, wasted stoner, Jesus freak and recluse, is palpable.
