A first goal for David Ngog helped Liverpool to a 4-0 win over a strong Rangers side at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.
Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun also found the net in a thrilling encounter which saw our pre-season campaign burst into life.
Trips to the Wirral, Switzerland, Germany and Spain yielded just four goals for the travelling Kop to cheer, but a rush of goalmouth action north of the border had the faithful purring.
Their pre-match chat centred on Rafa Benitez's team selection, for in a city famed for its double acts (Rangers and Celtic; Hateley and McCoist; The Krankies) another perfect pairing was this afternoon born as Liverpool's two most expensive acquisitions, Robbie Keane and Torres, combined for the very first time.
They might have enjoyed just 45 minutes together, but initial glimpses of understanding were there for all to see: the Spaniard finding his partner with a Cruyff turn; Keane returning the favour with an intelligent dummy; then a neat one-two which Torres couldn't turn into a goal.
That said, it was Rangers, whose fans sang as if this were a Champions League semi-final, who had the best of the early exchanges, with former Celtic man Kenny Miller and teammate Lee McCulloch both coming close from the edge of the box.
It took 16 minutes for Liverpool to rouse as Steven Gerrard, Keane and Torres started to stamp their authority on the game. The latter headed narrowly over after a well-placed cross from left-back Andrea Dossena.
Next Benayoun thrilled the English contingent inside Ibrox with one of his mercurial runs. The Israeli skipped past five men before finally being stopped in his tracks in the D.
Never mind, for an opening goal was just around the corner. It was Damien Plessis who can claim the assist after his long-distance hit was spilled by Allan McGregor on 23 minutes, with Torres on hand to tap home his first strike of pre-season.
It was nearly two - and nearly a first Liverpool goal for Keane - when Gerrard surged forward for the umpteenth time before unleashing a fierce drive towards McGregor's goal. Again the 'keeper could only parry, this time towards centre-back Kirk Broadfoot, whose subsequent backpass was inches away from being converted by our new number seven.
Down at the other end, Diego Cavalieri, so impressive against Villarreal in midweek, had to make a fingertip save when Sasa Papac sent a teasing chip towards the top corner.
The Brazilian couldn't do anything, however, to stop Nacho Novo skipping towards an open goal on the stroke of half time. Fortunately, Dossena was on hand to thwart an almost certain equaliser with a marvellous goalline clearance.
Half-time brought five changes for Liverpool, Jamie Carragher giving an early indication that he would depart by throwing his shirt into the away end. Torres, Skrtel, Arbeloa and Plessis also made way, with Hyypia, Ngog, Alonso, Darby and Agger entering the fray.
The latter almost made an immediate impact at the wrong end when his attempt at a headed clearance went a little too close for Cavalieri's comfort. Luckily the ball crept over for a corner.
Minutes later Liverpool's new goalkeeper was again called into action when he palmed away a shot-cum-cross by substitute Jean Claude Darcheville.
Just as it seemed Rangers were closing in on a leveller, the visitors, or rather new boy Ngog, stuck the knife in. The French hotshot picked up the ball midway inside the Rangers half on 56 minutes, turning his man one way and the other before cracking an unstoppable left-foot shot into the bottom corner.
The goal prompted Benitez to make three more changes - Insua, Nemeth and Spearing replacing Gerrard, Kuyt and Keane - which, had the result not already been in the bag, could have been described as inspired.
For just seconds after play resumed, with the clock reading 58 minutes, Insua burst down the left before picking out Nemeth, whose dipping effort was palmed away to be volleyed home by the impressive Benayoun.
It was almost 4-0 five minutes later when Ngog grazed the post after swinging his left foot from 25 yards.
The fourth did arrive on 70 minutes when Alonso, whose passing was exemplary, found Nemeth in the box before Christian Dailly's rash challenge gave referee Craig Thomson no option but to point to the spot. Alonso duly converted and it was game over.

The championship game would be equally as entertaining as the consolation match. Union Latina versus Tierra Nueva. Union Latina (pictured) was in the top four for all of the spring season. Tierra Nueva kept the #1 seed spot through four games, then faltered in the next three games but found its form in the knock out rounds to reserve its spot in the final. Scoring would open fast in this game as Union Latina’s Jonathan Marquez netted the first goal of the game in the 10th minute. Martin Ortiz would equalize in the 12th minute for Tierra Nueva. Jonathan Marquez would find the back of the net not long after, for his 2nd goal of the game in the 20th minute and the lead would stand until the 2nd half. Serafin Ortiz would slot home in the 53rd minute with the tying goal. Jose Sanches would earn Tierra Nueva’s go ahead goal in the 56th minute and it would seem an upset was in the making. Union Latina had other plans and in the 74th minute, Ricardo Padilla would bring down a Union Latina player in the penalty area after a 30-yard break away, earning a red card ejection for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity and leaving the referee no alternative but to award a spot kick, which was easily converted by Juan Adan thus tying the game at 3-3. Shortly thereafter, an instant reply of the 74th minute would reappear in the 78th minute similarly, with Nicolas Govea bringing the same Union Latina player down on a solo breakaway. Govea received his marching orders earning the red card and leaving Union Latina with an optimum free kick just outside the penalty area. That kick too, was converted by Juan Adan which would be the deciding goal of the game and the one to earn Union Latina the spring 2008 Men’s Championship trophy. The final Union Latina 4 Tierra Nueva 3.
The fall season is tentatively scheduled to kick off on August 24th. Registration deadline for new teams to enter the fall league is August 8th. New team entry fee is $1495. Teams returning from the spring league pay just $1195. Registration forms are available from Lake Country Soccer’s web site.

By now most clubs have started their pre-season preparations, most Spaniards have recovered from their Euro party hangover and I had time to sit back and inspect the Euros from Germany's perspective for one final Euro 2008 blog post, before leaving the tournament to the history books and moving on to the World Cup qualifiers.
This is also your great last chance to share your favourite moments of the tournament with the readers of this blog.
Best Comedy Act: A tie between Germany's defence and David Odonkor's performance on the right side of midfield against Croatia.
Special Achievement in Jersey Technology: Jens Lehmann for wearing a neon jersey, which left a glowing spot on my TV screen long after the games had ended. Mad Jens proved that he is also a mad scientist, as neon coloured jerseys are scientifically rumoured to irritate penalty takers. Lehmann didn't need to save a single penalty, but his jersey still managed to irritate Germany's defenders.
Most consistent player: Torsten Frings - consistently grumpy.
Stick it to the man Award: Lukas Podolski scoring three goals, setting up another two and sticking it to Uli Hoeness and whoever was involved in bringing him to Bayern.
Vanity Fair Moment: Oliver Bierhoff and Michael Ballack getting into an argument after the final. The media assumes it was about some silly banner for the fans.

Its not an uncommon sight at all for the Bolton Faithful to be waiting and wondering whats going to happen next during the summer transfer window. With the transfer funds seemingly in a perpetual void and the better players being linked with moves to teams that have the cash to splash, most Trotters fans typically spend their summers wondering who well lose next, or what virtually unknown player will be suiting up in the White Hot colours next year. Its a routine that is as old as Boltons Premier League stay itself. Its just something that one has to adapt to as a part of life supporting the Wanderers.
This year; however, things seem to be different. It started with the much-maligned releasing of Stelios Giannakopoulos, Andranik Teymourian and Ivan Campo. Naturally, the average Bolton fan would be thinking one of two things Here we go again, another bargain building transfer window or Finally! Campos gone, though why ditch Stelios and Andranik? So, ultimately, the standard ins-and-outs of a Premier League team. Then, something happened that shifted the focus somewhat. Bolton picked up Fabrice Muamba from Birmingham for 5 Million, which led to the common perception of Well, I suppose we wont have our new Anelka this time, either. This perspective coming, obviously, from the usual lack of transfer funds splashed around during the transfer windows. So, life went on and Bolton were linked with increasingly higher-profile players such as Anthony Annan, James Harper, Riki, Carlos Tenorio, Milan Baros, and Nikola Zigic. Fair enough, this is the typical rumor mill that stirs up this time of the year. Nothing new or exciting to get anxious about, and with multiple teams looking at each player, they all seemed like an outlandish link.
Then it happened. A name surfaced that had been on the Bolton radar before, and was close to a move to the Reebok but for the price. Johan Elmanders name was tossed into the mix, and suddenly he was ready for a move away from his club, Toulouse. Could this be the Anelka replacement we were promised? A few more days passed and a story surfaced citing Bolton Chairman Phil Gartside as being ready to break the transfer record to capture a striker, and the Bolton eye shifted once again to the name that had surfaced only days before. Within a few days of this announcement, the link with Milan Baros grew stronger; however, with a valuation of only 4.3 Million, he couldnt have been the one that would break the record. At last, after what seemed like months of delay, the day came and an Undisclosed Fee plus Daniel Braaten was offered to Toulouse, and long-time target Johan Elmander became the newest Bolton Wanderer. Trotters fans breathed a sigh of relief at this news, but it was the news that followed that was even more exciting from a fans perspective. One very simple phrase that was echoed by Chairman and Manager alike: re still looking.s only one phrase, but the impact of that phrase has left an impact on the Trotters faithful, and with each passing day in this transfer window, speculation surfaces and we finally have reason to get our hopes up that just maybe this will be the year Bolton get themselves into the true financial aspects of the Premier League. No longer the poor Lancashire team, Bolton were really ready to play with the big boys on the pitch and in the transfer market. Its true, there are still no rumors linking players the caliber of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Reebok; however, thats just fine, because for the first time in quite some time, Trotters fans can look longingly at the Transfer speculation and hold a genuine interest that perhaps that player linked with the Reebok may actually wind up there. That is the impact that one little phrase can make.
So its a good time to be a Wanderers fan, for the first time in a long time. We have our Anelka replacement, as promised. Weve signed a decent quality midfielder to strengthen the squad, and Jussi Jaaskelainen re-signed despite links to some of the top clubs in the world. So, what is it that will have the Wanderers faithful wondering, you ask? Well, its simply the meaning of that phrase, and the depth theyre willing to go. Will we be picking up any more multi-million pound players? Will we be signing Ricardo Gardner and Danny Guthrie? At last, we can feel giddy like the rest of the Premier League teams as each day dawns and the list of potential new players surfaces. It would appear that manager Gary Megson has earned the trust of the Bolton brass, as hes certainly getting the financial backing this time around that took Big Sam 8 years to gain. Could it be, the new White Hot era at last.

We are at the exact midway point of the season and balloting for the MLS All-Star game is set to close tomorrow. With that in mind, I'm curious to hear what players people believe deserve to be on the MLS All-Star Team.
We already know about the ballot-stuffing going on in Toronto, but I want to hear from the SBI Mafia. Give me your starting XI, including goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards (and I'm talking who deserves to go, none of this 'I won't vote for my guy because I don't want him to play in the game and get hurt' business either). Give your list, then feel free to share your thoughts on the team, as well as your selections, in the comments section below.
I wrote a piece on who I think the Best XI should be for ESPN.com last week. I haven't changed my mind on the selections although Luciano Emilio makes a strong case (though I stick to the belief that he AND Edson Buddle had great months but had little impact the first two months of the season so they miss out). I also picked the lineup based on specific positions, which I think you should considering this team will play in an actual game.
Now it's your turn, submit your ballot and I will look to put together a reader's-choice MLS All-Star XI.
Fire away.

The Springfield Demize will be hosting a pair of games Wednesday and Thursday.
Wednesdays game is against the Thunder Bay Chill, a game rescheduled due to rain earlier this month. The Chill moved into a tie for 1st place in the Heartland Division with a 2-0 win over the Kansas City Brass Monday night, with 22 points in 9 games played. Tomorrows game will be their 4th in 5 days, which combined with the Demizes strong play against them June 14th potentially boding well for our home boys.
The Demize is the only team without a shot at first place with six games remaining so their opportunity now is to play the spoiler, as the Chill and Colorado Rapids U23 are best positioned for the Division title. They host the St Louis Lions on Thursday evening, a team that has just lost 4 straight games to Thunder Bay after early success that included winning a spot in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Ill have video from the game Sunday between St Louis and Thunder Bay, a 3-2 win for the Chill that saw two Lions and one Chill player ejected from the game, finishing play 9v10.
