So, you might already know this, but Iceland won the silver medal in the Olympic Handball championship! Pretty impressive for such a tiny country. In fact, for something to be considered a true achievement here, it has to be a per-capita world record. And Iceland is allegedly the smallest country (population-wise) in the world to get a medal in a team sport at the Olympics, so there you go!
The final was on Sunday at 7.45am, and I joined the rest of the nation in getting up early (despite a party on the previous night) and watching the game. Unfortunately France proved to be too strong a foe.
Note that this is the only medal Iceland got in these Olympics. Which is approximately the same number of medals won by Lebanon (it's just one less medal for Lebanon...).
Anyway, today as I left work I walked by Kjarvalsstaðir, a nearby art museum which contains some paintings of Iceland's most famous painter, Johannes Kjarval. On the side of the building I saw three guys (all with the same blue shirt) peeing on a side wall of the museum.
Now, public urination is pretty common here on weekend nights, when Icelanders metamorphose from quiet distant folk to loud drunken party animals. But during the day? It's pretty uncommon.
A woman who was not too far from these guys (and must have seen them pee) told them as they were done, "Til hamingju með það", a form of congratulations. It struck me as a bit weird that she would congratulate them for peeing, as she did not seem sarcastic and one of the guys politely thanked her. But as I made it to the front of the Museum, I saw a bunch of people grouped there, including policemen and whatnot... And then it clicked, those guys were some of the handball players, and there was a celebration of sorts! In fact, I had read that they were going to receive some awards with elaborate names from the state, such as Order of the Falcon and Knight Grand Cross. Fancy.
As I inquired there, I found out that they were gearing up for a celebration party downtown. I continued walking home and by the time I reached Árnarhóll, the grassy knoll next to Lækjartorg, lots of people were heading there and watching a big screen, while sellers on the side were lining up Icelandic flags and t-shirts. As I walked into Vesturbær (the Western part of town) people were walking opposite me and towards the knoll... They must be getting ready for quite the party!
Indeed as I turn on the TV now I see the president being interviewed. About the Handball team. Well this is Iceland, it's not like there is much happening here otherwise! :). And now, he's making a speech - live - in front of the players... And he just said, "Er hægt að vera Íslendingur, og að vera bestur" which translates as "It's possible to be an Icelander, and to be the best". And he's handing out the awards.
Alright, enough with the live blogging of the handball celebrations. It's time to go to the gym to get in better shape, and possibly become the best.

Today is one of the clearest days in Beijing, and certainly the clearest in about a month. The sky was blue and clear. Apparently yesterdays rain cleared the skies.
I went to work, where my only assignment was to watch the French compete in the womens gymnastics individual all-around final and interview them if they medaled. They did not, so I joined a friend to explore the Olympic Green a little. Thats when the adventures started.
We heard there was pin-trading outside the MPC (main press center). We didnt find anything in the direction we took outside the security gates, so we figured wed go back through security and find another side of the MPC. We got into the MPC (we didnt have clearance for it), ended up wandering around the basement of the place, twice to blocked-off exits, for a while before we found a security guard to ask how to get out. He led us out past the clothes-washers and cooks to the cafeteria of the MPC.
Once outside, a Chinese- and English-speaking woman approached my friend and I, asking if our volunteer uniforms were the U.S. team uniforms and if we were therefore athletes. Even after she found out we were volunteers and not athletes, she wanted us to take a picture with her two children.
On entering the State Grid pavilion, a staff member informed my friend that she was the 2,008th visitor that day, and we were escorted to the second floor for her to be interviewed and given a gift. Her gift: five books in Chinese, a flashlight that is magnetic and can be used as a night light for a bike rider (you know, the kind with a white light in front and a red one in back), a flashdrive/bracelet, and a hand-held fan that requires three batteries that my friend didnt have. In the spirit of friendship, I asked what I got for being the friend to the 2,008th visitor and was also given a fan that requires three batteries. I didnt have any batteries with me.
That would have been enough of an adventure in itself.
On leaving, someone asked if we wanted to trade pins. We started trading pins, which attracted more pin-traders, which attracted more pin-traders, which attracted more pin-traders we walked 100 feet in 30 minutes. The majority of that ground was covered when my friend made the mistake of giving a pin away to someone to start their collection, which resulted in what she describes as a sudden wall of hands wanting a free pin. She got wide-eyed, grabbed her pin bag and quickly walk away.
If youre looking for internet, the State Grid pavilion has wireless. At least, according to the German woman sitting on the steps outside the pavilion checking her e-mail on her laptop. I felt a little bad for her because when I sat down for a friendly chat with her, two minutes later we were surrounded by people wanting to trade pins.
My favorite exchange of the day:
German man (I had conversations with people of other nationalities today, as well) : Are you volunteers?
Me:
German man: Are you Asian?
Me: (thinking, Did we really just get asked that? Me, with light-brown hair and brown eyes, standing next to a curly-haired blond woman?) Uh, um, no?
German:
Wow.
And for my BA (bonne action) for the day, I helped direct a woman from Reuters find her way to the Birds Nest. She got off metro line 10 to take metro line 8. I suggested the bus would be the fastest way. She was determined to take line 8. A friend (different from the one earlier in the day) and I walked her in the direction of the security lines for line 8. She got almost to the lines, then decided it would be faster to walk. We told her it would take 45 minutes to walk and the subway would take 5 minutes, followed by a 10-minute walk to the Birds Nest. We then told her to go to the farthest security line (reserved for accreditated personnel access) which would be faster than waiting in the ticket-holder lines. I hope she made it in time. But gosh she was hard to convince. That brings my personal count of helping people find their way to three: A Russian journalist, a French personal trainer and now an American journalist with Reuters. And I feel important every time.
Tomorrow: in the morning, well cover the first day of trampoline gymnastics, then several of us have tickets provided by BOCOG to watch athletics in the evening. Itll be my first time inside the Birds Nest.

In an ambitious journey, two Irish sailors have completed an adventurous six-week voyage from Dublin to the Danish port of Roskilde aboard a reproduction of an actual Viking ship dating from 1042. The Sea Stallion from Glendalough sailed 1,400 nautical miles, arriving without incident to a cheering crowd of more than 10,000 people at Roskilde’s harbour, The Irish Times reports.
According to the Irish Times, the ship enjoyed nearly ideal sailing conditions for their ambitious archaeological project that was deemed a major success. Archaeologist-sailors Triona Nicholl and Sinead Quirke captained the Viking ship, and were joined by three other scientific crewmembers for about half of the voyage to study the workings of the ship. Their arrival was the highlight of a weekend event hosted by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum, who transformed Roskilde’s harbour into a festive Viking marketplace.
The welcoming party included several dignitaries such as Cllr Eibhlín Byrne, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Joe Hayes, the Irish Ambassador to Denmark, and Dr Pat Wallace, the director of the National Museum of Ireland.
The Sea Stallion did endure a few desperate moments during its voyage, however. Nicholl recalled the challenging Wicklow-Land’s End passage, when the notorious Bristol Channel swell made more than half the crew seasick. The Sea Stallion is a replica of a Viking ship named Skuldelev 2, which is one of five Viking vessels discovered near Roskilde in 1957. Carbon-dating tests date the age of the Skuldelev 2 to the year 1042.

The Landsmót Horse Festival - the Icelandic National Horse Show - took place near Hella in South Iceland this year. The organizers are very satisfied with this year’s tournament, reports Fréttabladid. More than 13,000 people visited the compitition on its final day. Also the police was lucky to say that everything went smoothly but the large number of visitors. The Horse festival takes place every two years. The next Landsmot 2010 will be held at Vindheimamelar near Skagafjörður in North Iceland.

My favorite poets are Nazim Hikmet and Charles Bukowski, while my favorite playwrights include Lanford Wilson and David Mamet. There are at least 100 film directors I greatly admire, ranging from the experimentalist Stan Brakhage to the infamous Turkish director Cetin Inanc (of "The Turkish Star Wars" fame).
I am a Turkish-American, and I speak Turkish with 90 % fluency and a with a slight SW Va. accent.
My politics are moderate liberal. I am not a fan of Dick Cheney, though I do credit him with being the actual president of the United States.
My favorite cities in the world are (in no particular order): Greensboro, NC, Roanoke, Va., Istanbul and Bursa, Turkey, Salt Lake City, Utah, Washington D.C., Paris, Amsterdam, Montreal and Antigua, Guateamala. Ihave been told that Tashkent, Uzbekistan is nice, but I've never been there.
The most shocking detail of my personal life is that I enjoy dinning at The Acropolis, a Greek restaurantin Greensboro, though Arzu in Roanoke, a Turkish restaurant, is a great place to eat too.

A 30 year-old passenger who fell ill during a recent Iceland Express flight from Barcelona to Reykjavik owes her life to the quick thinking of the captain and crew, according Icelandic news site 24 Stundir.
The passenger became seriously unwell after just 45 minutes’ flying time with an irregular heartbeat and difficulty breathing.
It is believed that the woman suffered an acute asthma attack, and had forgotten to bring her medication with her on the flight. The crew gave her oxygen and asthma medicine from the plane’s emergency kit, but without success.
“The crew began by asking if there was a doctor onboard, and then considering the woman’s condition, it was decided to land the plane as quickly as possible,” the captain said. Out of respect for his colleagues, the captain has requested his name not be published.
The pilots landed the plane in Basel, Switzerland. There the woman was rushed to hospital, where she stayed for a day and a half before continuing to Iceland where she is visiting relatives.
Doctors told the patient afterwards that she could have died from a lack of oxygen if not for the quick thinking of the Iceland Express crewmembers.
The captain said the landing in Switzerland went well, but added that when a plane has only spent a short period of time in the air and is still full of fuel, it can be very difficult to land. For that reason, the pilots had to burn off fuel as quickly as possible before landing, including flying with the landing gear down to reduce aerodynamic efficiency.
The captain also said that once or twice a year he is required to perform an early landing due to a passenger falling ill. “I didn’t do anything heroic,” he said. “This is just a part of our jobs, and we are trained to deal with difficult situations.”
Health and safety regulations meant that the crew was not permitted to continue the flight. “As there was no other Iceland Express crew at the airport at the time, the passengers were put up in a hotel overnight,” said Iceland Express media representative Lara Omarsdottir. She said the other passengers on board were very understanding and were able to continue their journey they next day.

Phelps tied Mark Spitz's record of four gold medals in individual events. As a biography, Rebecca Soni was born on March 18, 1987 in Freehold, New Jersey. She is 21 years old. Her parents, Peter and Kinga, who live in Arizona, both were born in Hungary, and moved to the United States before Rebeccas sister Rita was born.
She attended West Windsor High in Princeton Junction, New Jersey and was a member of the swim team. She holds records in the state of New Jersey in the 100y and 200y breaststroke.
Rebecca attends USC, where she is majoring in communications. In 2006, as a freshman, she won the NCAA 200 y breaststroke title. That same year she won the 200y breaststroke and placed second in the 100y breast.
In 2007, she had minor heart surgery during the summer, but this did not hinder her sophomore year at USC. She defended her title in the 200y breaststroke. She placed second in the breaststroke at the U.S. vs. Australia Duel in the Pool, and third in the 100m breast. She competed at the Japan International and placed second in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.
At the Olympic Trials in July, Rebecca won the 200m breaststroke, beating Amanda Beard, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist.

Unprecedented hour, around the clock coverage. Team play for bronze is seeing celebrated American players turn out to be less skilled than their counterparts from other nations, whose players grew up post Dream Team, wanting one day to be as good as the top Americans in the NBA. And while that may have been the case, from what I could tell it had plenty of excitement. Handball games that was established that I suspect will survive our lifetimes.
