Part of the promise from the Olympic Delivery Authority is that local East Londoners will benefit from skills and jobs as a result of hosting the Games. The London Citizens' alliance has asked for the ODA to guarantee a 'living wage' of a minimum of 7.05 per hour.
Although the ODA has agreed this in principle, in practice they say that they cannot over-ride national pay agreements between construction contractors and the unions. The London Citizens' group consider this to be back-tracking on the agreement, and letting down the people of London.

Would you like to reduce those worrisome fine lines on your face and look youthful again? Here are some helpful tips.
As you get up there in years, certain problems are going to crop up and one of them is wrinkles. They can show up around your eyes, forehead, cheeks and neck. You can get rather depressed when you look into a mirror. Take heart, there are answers.
Maybe you cannot stop time from marching on, but you can reduce the signs of the aging process and look better than ever. Here is what happens and some suggestions to follow.
Why Do You Develop Wrinkles?
As a person ages, the skin undergoes significant changes. The inner layer of the skin begins to thin and the cells begin to divide more slowly. Fat cells begin to lessen or die beneath the dermis.
The network of collagen fibers and elastin which provide a sort of scaffolding for the surface layer begin to loosen and unravel. Skin then loses its elasticity. It tends to droop and forms furrows.
The oil secreting and sweat glands atrophy, and the skin cannot retain its moisture. Therefore, it becomes dry and scaly. Constant facial expressions form characteristic lines. Gravity makes the situation worse and contributes to the formation of drooping eyelids and jowls. Also, eyebrows tend to move up as someone ages perhaps because of forehead wrinkles and the skin has less of an ability to repair itself so wounds heal more slowly.
There are other forces at play that can make your skin suffer, such as :
1. The sun damages collagen fibers and causes an accumulation of abnormal elastin. Metalloproteinases, or enzymes, are produced that are able to repair most of the damage, however, it is this repetition of the rebuilding process that is done over and over again that causes skin problems.
2. The suns UV radiation promotes oxidation. This also leads to the development of skin abnormalities.
3. Cigarette smoking causes the thickening and fragmentation of elastin, reduces circulation and the amount of oxygen that is supplied to the skin, and leads to less Collagen formation and reduced water content in the skin. Lastly, smoking compromises the ability of the skin to fend off free radicals causing cell destruction.
4. Air pollution – Ozone may be a problem for the skin. It may cause depletion of Vitamin E in the skin which is a vital antioxidant.
5. Rapid weight loss – This can cause fine lines since it reduces the volume of fat cells which cushion the face. This will cause the skin to sag.
6. Heredity – You may have inherited some skin characteristics from your parents.
Wrinkles are the most noticable signs of aging. As tissues sag, these lines form a type of canvas that is covered with cracks that have varying depths. As time marches on, they deepen and reach the dermis. As the dermis loses its elasticity, it becomes slack which leads to the formation of more pronounced wrinkles over 0.05 mm in depth.
Here is the normal progression of wrinkles characterized by age group:
20-25 – Vertical wrinkles on ones forehead and even between the eyebrows may already be visible. Fine lines at the external edges of the eyes are not yet noticeable.
25-40 – In the epidermis, wrinkles begin to deepen. They are less than 0.0005 mm in depth. They are caused by the superficial drying out of ones skin as well as the slowing down of cellular renewal.
40-50 – Fine lines around the lips, crows feet, furrows alongside of the nose and the line between the eyebrows are all beginning to deepen. The skin loses it elasticity and the facial contours are not less well defined.
50 and over – Hormonal secretions end as menopause appears and this speeds up the aging process. The skins surface begins to modify and intermediary lines are replaced by ever deepening furrows.
The older you become, the more wrinkles you get. You can minimize this damage by taking good care of your skin.
Anti Aging Skin Care Treatments: here are a few promising treatments for sagging skin. There are some new wrinkle creams and topical lotions, like Avotone or Revitol, that contain natural ingredients that may help lessen this problem. For example:
1. Argireline - this is a safer alternative to Botox. It is not derived from any poisonous substance, but from naturally occurring amino acids. This element relaxes facial tension because it is able to reduce the excessive release of neurotransmitters which are also known as catecholamines. These make your facial muscles become tense. If your muscles are not tense, they do not contribute to wrinkles. Also, it may slow down the degeneration of elastin and collagen which normally occurs with aging.
2. Dermox SRC - this is a specially tested serum that helps to control wrinkles, increases the synthesis of collagen, and restores the skins surface.
3. DMAE - it has been indicated that this antioxidant is able to function as a cell membrane stabilizing agent. It reinforces the skins foundation of elastin and collagen, makes cells live longer, and helps avoid cell dehydration. It may also assist in the healing of scars, which includes acne scars, and helps to flush out excessive lipofuscin from skin cells reducing age spots.
How Can You Minimize Fine Lines and Wrinkles?
There are many things you can do to reduce the wrinkles that you already have and minimize future occurences. These include:

(BEIJING August 13) -- Where else can we start with a review of day five of Beijing 2008 than with a living legend? The name Michael Fred Phelps was etched into Olympic record books today as the man with more gold medals to his name than any other person in sporting history.
Having drawn level with the four other folks who have won nine overall Olympic gold medals yesterday, Phelps didn't just nudge ahead by winning the Men's 200m Butterfly for his landmark 10th overall Olympic gold and fourth of Beijing 2008 (it almost goes without saying that it was in a new world record of 1:52.03), but an hour later he then swam the lead-off leg as the United States Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay team of Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay, completely obliterating the world record to seize gold -- Phelps's 11th gold overall in a breathtaking time of 6:58.56, to shave an unbelievable 4.68 seconds off the previous record.
Federica Pellegrini of Italy also set a new world record of 1:54.82 to take gold in the Women's 200m Freestyle, while the Women's 200m Individual Medley world record also fell to Stephanie Rice of Australia.
Kitajima Kosuke of Japan was an Olympic record breaker in the semifinal of the Men's 200m Breaststroke, and Frenchman Alain Bernard took back his 100m Freestyle world record that had been bettered by Eamon Sullivan of Australia earlier this week in a time of 47.20, only for Sullivan to bounce back and set another new world record of 47.05 seconds. Don't expect this record to survive tomorrow's final!
Host China had a golden day in many sports on day five -- none more spectacular than in Weightlifting, where defending champion Liu Chunhong heaved world records in the Women's 69 kilogram category by lifting 128kg in the Snatch, 158kg in the Clean and Jerk and 286kg in total weight. Liu's gold was China's sixth Weightlifting gold in the tournament. Sa Jae-hyouk of the Republic of Korea won the Men's 77 kilogram class.

Chinese divers are halfway through their Phelps-like quest of a perfect sweep of the eight Diving gold medals after world champions Qin Kai and Wang Feng won the Men's Synchronized 3m Springboard to make it a team total of four gold medals from four finals.

Dmitry Sautin and Yuriy Kunakov of Russia earned silver, while Illya Kvasha and Oleksiy Prygorov of Ukraine took bronze. The legendary Sautin, 34, is now a five-time Olympian who has won eight medals overall between 1992 and 2008.
There was host joy, too, as China's Women's gymnasts took the Team event gold medal for the first time with a total of 188.900 points. The United States won the silver medal with 186.525 points and Romania grabbed bronze with 181.525.
Hot-shot Chen Ying was another Chinese gold medalist, winning the Women's 25m Pistol with an Olympic record final score of 793.4 points.
Other countries had a golden day too. Germany clutched double Fencing gold with world champion Britta Heidemann taking the Women's Individual Epee and Benjamin Philip Kleibrink winning the Men's Individual Foil gold.
Ueno Masae of Japan took just six seconds to beat Cuba's Anaysi Hernandez with an ippon to claim her second consecutive Olympic gold in the Judo Women's -70kg class, while Irakli Tsirekidze of Georgia, gold medalist of the 2007 World Championships, won gold in his Olympic debut in the Men's -90kg class by beating Amar Benikhlef of Algeria with a shido.
It was a case of brothers in arms (well arm locks!) as Steeve Guénot of France and Georgia's Manuchar Kvirkelia won gold medals in the Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling 66 kilogram and 74 kilogram weight classes. Kvirkvelia won his country's first gold of the Beijing Olympics by defeating China's Chang Yongxiang in the Men's Greco-Roman 74 kilogram final, while Guénot became the first French Olympic Wrestling champion in 84 years by beating Kanatbek Begaliev of Kyrgyzstan in the 66kg category gold. Amazingly Guénot's older brother, Christophe, claimed a 74kg weight class bronze medal,
So to life on the open roadwhere Kristin Armstrong of the United States claimed the Women's Individual Time Trial gold medal after pegging back early leader Emma Pooley of Great Britain, who took silver. Karin Thurig of Switzerland took bronze ahead of 49-year-old cycling legend Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli of France who narrowly missed out on a fourth Olympic medal.
Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara powered home to take the Men's Individual Time Trial gold, fending off the challenge of silver medalist Gustav Larsson of Sweden. Levi Leipheimer of the United States won bronze.

Away from the medals, in the semifinals of the Badminton Women's Doubles tournament two Chinese pairs met, with Du Jing and Yu Yang defeating Wei Yili and Zhang Yawen 21-19, 21-12. They now face Lee Hyo-jung and Lee Kyung-won of the Republic of Korea in the final.
First-seeds Kido Markis and Setiawan Hendra of Indonesia are safely through to the semifinals of Men's Doubles and will face Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark. Hwang Ji-man and Lee Jae-jin of the Republic of Korea defeated Japanese shuttlers Tadashi Ohtsuka and Keita Masuda to set up a semifinal against World No. 3 pair Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng of China.
In Women's Singles, Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti progressed into the semifinals by beating India's Saina Nehwal. She will meet World No. 7 China's Zhang Ning, who advanced to the semifinals by defeating World No. 5 Pi Hongyan of France. The other semifinal was an all-China affair between Lu Lan China and Xie Xingfang.
In Rowing, the A-finalists were decided in six of the 14 Olympic boat classes. China's Zhang Xiuyun won her semifinal of the Women's Single Sculls, with Michelle Guerette of the United States and early race leader Miroslava Knapkova of the Czech Republic also going through to the final. They are joined by second semifinal winner Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus, Rumyana Neykova of Bulgaria and Julia Michalska of Poland.
Rafael Nadal of Spain and Serbia's Novak Djokovic moved into the quarterfinals of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Tennis tournament, and in Archery, No. 10 seed Lee Chang-hwan of the Republic of Korea shot a near perfect score of 117 out of 120 to set a 12-arrow Olympic record in the Men's Individual elimination rounds.
Lee and his teammate Im Dong-hyun, along with three of the top four seeded archers, Juan Rene Serrano of Mexico, Viktor Ruban of Ukraine and Park Kyung-mo (ROK), advanced as expected to the 1/8 elimination round.
Among team sports Brazil has yet to drop a set in the Women's Volleyball tournament and is guaranteed to reach the quarterfinals after defeating Serbia 25-15, 25-13, 25-23. Serbia's chances to reach the quarterfinals remain high as this was their first loss of the tournament. Italy remained undefeated by beating Algeria.
Russia beat Belarus 71-65 in a group A match in the preliminary round of the Olympic Women's Basketball tournament. Australia beat the Republic of Korea 90-62 and Latvia recorded their first Olympic tournament win by beating Brazil, who remains without a win from three games.
Spain beat the Czech Republic 74-55 in their group B game; China beat New Zealand 80-63; and the United States easily brushed aside Mali to keep their 100 percent record intact.
Those were just some of the highlights from a thrilling day five of Beijing 2008 the greatest sporting show on Earth.

9:55 PM: In the history of the Olympic games, there have been only five 9-time gold medallists. Paavo Nurmi of Finland, a legend. The incomparable Carl Lewis from Team USA. Russian Larysa Latynina. Mark Spitz. And now...the Baltimore Bullet-Michael Phelps!! Tonight, in about 15 minutes, Phelps will be making history, so likely to win his signature event the 200 M Butterfly. The photographers are in their positions. Bring on the swimmers!

9:51 PM: Remember Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser?? They've advanced to the playoff round. So the world champs prove that the pathetic first match vs. the Latvians was just a bad fluke. These guys are taking it to their opponents, winning 21-12, 21-13 in just 39 minutes today!

6:59 PM: Let's get Day 5 started!!!! 17 gold medals to be handed out! And 2 of those is likely to be around Michael Phelps' neck by about midnight tonight. Michael Phelps will be making history at the Water Cube tonight going for his 10th and 11th CAREER Olympic titles, the most ever for an Olympian. And they will be his 4th and 5th gold out of an almost guaranteed 8. You have got to tune in to Prime Time tonight! Don't want to miss out on Olympic history!! But don't count out the Canadians, Alexandre Despatie and Arturo Miranda are on the list of contenders for the Men's 3 M Springboard Synchro event. Our relay team will hope to make some noise in the Cube tonight, having qualified for the final of the Men's 4 by 200 Freestyle event. Brent Hayden and Colin Russell were rested so they could be pumped up for this final. We may very well see Canada on the medal board by tomorrow morning.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the short history of our little family, particularly the events in my life that have led me up to this point. I love thinking about the early stages in our relationship. I always get little butterflies in my stomach when I think about it because, as I'm sure you would all agree, falling in love is the best feeling in the world. I'm excited to write some of this stuff down, and hope that my memory hasn't already faded and is at least somewhat accurate. It's funny because Steve and I have really different memories about how it all went down! Luckily, I'm the one who has this overwhelming urge to write, so it will be my wonderful (and incredibly accurate) memories that will be documented for posterity!!!

Steve and I met in August of 2002. I was 18 (that's right, I said it!) and Steve was 21. I had only lived in Logan for a couple of weeks. I was living in the dorms (VVT baby!), and just getting to know the girls I lived with. Steve was living with his brothers and some friends in an apartment right off campus. As it turns out, we had some mutual friends and both got invited to the same apartment on the same night. I was actually writing to a missionary at the time and was late to the party because I went out to eat with his parents. The other girls at the party told everyone the reason I was late, and Steve says this is the reason (excuse) why it took him so long to FINALLY ask me out! I honestly don't remember what I first th0ught of Steve (and he says the same about me). I wish I would have written my first impression down, but unfortunately (and obviously), I had no idea at the time that the memory would be an important one. That night marked the start of our friendship, but was nowhere near the start of our romance. Steve quickly became one of my best friends and we spent a TON of time (like every night) together over the next couple of months. I have so many fun memories from that time.

I am so grateful for this time because I got to know Steve in a whole different way than I would have if we had skipped this part and just started dating. I learned to love him and trust him and want to spend all of my time with him before we had even been on our first date!

I wanted to post pictures of Steve and I and all of the fun things we did before we started dating. Unfortunately, it was before the time of digital cameras and we have no scanner, so you will just have to use your imagination.

The history of cheerleading goes as far back as the late 1880's when the first organised, recorded yell was performed on an American Campus: "Ray, Ray' Ray! TIGER, TIGER, SIS, SIS, SIS! In 1884, Thomas Peebles, a graduate of Princeton University, took that yell, and the sport of [American] Football (actually derived from Rugby), to the University of Minnesota. It was from that campus that organised cheerleading came into being.

Cheerleading, as we know it today, was initiated in 1898 by Johnny Campbell, an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota, who stood before the crowd at a football game and directed them in a famous and still used yell. "Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!"

Johnny Campbell's innovation of cheerleading was documented in the following story that appeared in the November 12, 1898, edition of a Minnesota student publication "Ariel": "The following were nominated to lead the Yelling today: Jack (sic) Campbell, F.G. Kotlaba, M.J. Luby, Albert Armstrong of the Academics; Wickersham of the Laws; and Litzenverg of the Medics. These men would see to it that everybody leaves the park today breathless and voiceless, as this is the last game here, it ought to be a revelation to the people of Minnesota in regard to University enthusiasm.". And so cheerleading officially began on November 2, 1898.

In the fall of 1919, some of America's greatest universities were just then becoming "great." For some reason, in those days, greatness was whether or not your university had a big, big football stadium. A stadium could accommodate large crowds, and large crowds helped to build good football teams, and the better your football team the more attention you could attract to your school. Attention was the name of the game, and if you could attract it, then your university could build itself into an important educational institution as well as being good at sports.

It was a "do or die" situation for the University of Kansas. For years their football team the "Jayhawks" had been playing in rickety old McCook Stadium, which had seats for only 2,000 people. Very few of the "big football teams" would come and play at Kansas because the crowds were so small.

On a cold autumn afternoon, a great story of cheerleadership was about to unfold. And it took a great cheerleader to engineer what was about to be a massive job. His name was Shirley Windsor (that's right, and his squad numbered only three individuals.)

Kansas had been invited to Lincoln, Nebraska, to play the nationally ranked University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. An awesome task for any football team, and especially so for the Jayhawks because the Cornhuskers outweighed the KU team by nearly twenty pounds per man.

Head Coach Forrest Allen took his team to Nebraska and on a cold wet playing field, they played hard. In fact, they fought so well that the game's final score ended in a surprising tie 20-20. And KU might even have won the game if a touchdown in the final minute of play had not been called back by the Referee.

The Jayhawks came back to Kansas on a tide of enthusiasm that had never before happened to them. They were greeted by thousands of cheering students as their train pulled into the depot.

Realising what the situation could mean, Shirley Windsor called various influential former KU students on the phone. He was asking for money to build a big stadium. After calls to Wichita, Topeka, Kansas City.... Shirley had been turned down cold.

There was only one thing left to do.

Rushing up the steps of the KU administration building two at a time, Shirley asked to see the Chancellor of the university. He said "Sir, if you would give your permission to stop all classes for one hour tomorrow morning, I think we could have the greatest pep rally this school has ever seen."

The Chancellor gave his okay to the idea, and the next morning Shirley and his two fellow cheerleaders watched as the 4,000 students filed into Robinson Gymnasium.

"Our team has given us a great victory" explained Shirley. "Now is the time to build KU's first giant stadium so we can begin a football tradition in Kansas. But our alumni in cities around Kansas have turned us down. Will you help?"

After thirty minutes of rousing cheers and ceaseless noise, the 4,000 students pledged sixty Dollars per person of their own money (that was truly a lot in those days), and nearly a quarter of a million Dollars was raised in one short hour!

Two years later, on another cold wet afternoon, KU played Nebraska again. This time in the brand-new Memorial Stadium - 30,000 seats! And one of America's great college sports traditions was born.

Other great traditions in the art of cheerleading have developed over the years. The following highlights the major events in cheerleading history.

1870s: The first pep club was established at Princeton University.

1880s: The first organised yell was recorded at Princeton University.

1890s: Organised cheerleading was initiated at the University of Minnesota, as well as the first school "fight song".

1900s: Usage of the megaphone was becoming popular. (When the megaphone was invented is not known but it was in use on the day cheerleading began in 1898.) The first cheerleader fraternity, Gamma Sigma, was organised.

1910: The first "homecoming" was held at the University of Illinois

1920s: Women became active in cheerleading. The University of Minnesota cheerleaders began to incorporate gymnastics and tumbling into their cheers. The first flash-card cheering section was directed by Lindley Bothwell at Oregon State University.

1930s: Universities and high schools began performing pom-pon routines and using paper pompons.

1940s: The first cheerleader company was formed by Lawrence R. Herkimer of Dallas, Texas.

1950s: College cheerleaders began conducting cheerleading workshops to teach fundamental cheerleading skills.

1960s: The vinyl pompon was invented by Fred Gastoff and introduced by the International Cheerleading Foundation (now W.C.A.). The "Bruin High Step" style of pompon routine was developed by UCLA cheerleaders and the International Cheerleading Foundation.

1967: Marked the first annual ranking of the "Top Ten College Cheer Squads" and the initiation of the "Cheerleader All America" awards by the International Cheerleading Foundation.

1970s: In addition to cheering for the traditional football and basketball teams, cheerleaders began supporting all school sports, sometimes selecting several different squads to cheer for wrestling, track and swimming. The first nation-wide television broadcast of the Collegiate Cheerleading Championships on CBS-TV in the Spring of 1978, initiated by the International Cheerleading Foundation.

Cheerleading began to receive recognition as a serious athletic activity as the skills level dramatically increased in areas such as gymnastics, partner stunts, pyramids, and advanced jumps. Many high school cheerleading squads began to cheer for female sports (basketball, volleyball) in addition to male sports.

Training for cheerleading coaches was offered at summer cheerleading camps. Several colleges offered scholarships, college credits, and a four year letter programme.

1980s: National cheerleading competitions for junior and senior high school as well as collegiate squads took place across America. The I.C.F. Training Course for faculty cheerleading 'sponsors' and coaches was offered across the United States.

Cheerleaders increased their involvement in community service projects. Cheerleaders received national media recognition as one of the most important school leadership groups to promote enthusiastic, positive attitudes and school spirit within schools and the community.

Cheerleading has come a long way in ten decades. The importance of cheerleading has also come a long way and was first acknowledged by Willis Bugbee in 1927, when he wrote:

"The cheerleader, where once was merely tolerated, is now a person of real estate. His prestige is such that at many schools and colleges he must win his place in competitive examination."

And it is true today, that a person must be highly skilled and competitive in order to achieve the honoured and respected position of cheerleader. This cherished position has, throughout the years, been held by some truly famous talented people.

The list includes former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, actors Jimmy Stewart and Kirk Douglas, actresses Meryl Streep, Raquel Welch, and Cybil Shepard, just to name a few.

Whether you are a cheerleader, a yell leader, a songleader or a spiritleader (variations on the term "cheerleader"), or whether you are on an all female, an all male, or a combination male/female squad, you are striving towards one goal. That goal is to effectively lead a crowd in support of an athletic team and to generate spirit and pride within a school or community.

Kia Orana whanau, friends and anyone else ...

After our early start we headed of to town to Foodland and the locals were really happy to see us. They even took photos of us which they are going to put up later on this week ... we have made our mark already!

It was really cool at Ngatangiia to find out the history of where the waka departed from Rarotonga to Aotearoa. There are 7 plaques acknowledging the 7 main waka. We were pretty amazed to learn that approximately 1000 years ago our tipuna (ancestors) had been at that very spot. We also meet some guys Teheu and Ian who were preparing a waka called Te Au o Tonga for a voyage. They even let us board the waka and gave us some history of the place. It was awesome!

Some of us have been very obsessed with coconuts. They may be $3.00 back home, but here they are everywhere and all people want to do is crack them and drink the niu (coconut milk). Crazy!

Lastly, we went to the beach for the afternoon. Some of us went snorkeling, others played beach volleyball and some lay in the sun. Paris had so much fun she lost her voice. Probably playing volley against Matua Hone Murdoch didn't help!

We are back at Puaikura now, getting ready for a kai then a long waiata practice.

Zion National Park

We are located just a couple of miles from the East gate of Zion National Park so your adventure easily begins here. Drive the winding scenic roads of the park and enjoy taking photos or shooting video at many of the pullouts. You are near the top of Zion National Park and this upper end has a very different terrain than the lower areas. Stop at such view areas as Checkerboard Mesa and then park near the entrance of the Zion Tunnel and take a leisurely walk to the Blind Arch overlook. The mile-long tunnel in Zion goes right through the side of the mountain. Youll enjoy driving slowly through the tunnel because there are windows in several intervals that look out onto Zion National Park. Once you exit the tunnel you will follow a very scenic drive down into the valley of Zion National Park where your elevation will be approximately 4,000 feet. From April to October a shuttle runs from the town of Springdale and takes you into the main canyon. This shuttle is your only access into the canyon during these months, so park your car in Springdale and jump on the shuttle. This will take you to any number of scenic stops.

You may wish to take walks to Emerald Pools, Weeping Rock and the "Narrows" via the trail that begins at the Temple of Sinewava. Also stop at the turnout to shoot photos of the parks most famous formation "The Great White Throne." For more adventurous hikers we can tell you more about "Angels Landing" and other backcountry adventures. We can pack lunches and drinks for your day in Zion National Park. If youd like to make a loop out of your trip, you can venture off the road at the town of Rockville and venture to the old Ghost Town of Grafton. Here youll see an old school house and other buildings from the early settlers of this community. It is also the location of a famous movie scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. From here youll follow the well-graded dirt road up the hill and around toward the community of Apple Valley. Youll pass the Smiths Mesa and circle onto highway 59 and drive through Hildale on to Pipe Spring National Monument, a fort constructed for protection from the Indians along the Arizona Strip. Youll circle through Kanab and back to us near the end of a great day. Return to us in the afternoon or evening for a relaxing tub or Jacuzzi and dinner at the Buffalo Grill. Grand Canyon North Rim

We are a great jumping off point for many of the regions National Parks. The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is just two hours drive to the south. The drive is spectacular as you pass by Coral Pink Sand Dunes, the western town of Kanab and then make your way up onto the Kaibab Plateau and through the dense forest of Ponderosa Pines. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. Coral Pink Sand Dunes is just a short drive off Highway 89 (7 miles) and offers beautiful views of reddish colored sand dunes.

Kanab is a historic town and one where over 100 western movies were filmed in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Stop by the Frontier Movie Town to see old movie sets used by John Wayne and other famous men of the movie west. The north rim of the Grand Canyon is higher than the south rim and it is said that the views are more spectacular. This is different than Zion National Park where you are looking up at formations, at Grand you are on top looking down at it all. Have lunch at the lodge or well be happy to provide you with a lunch for the day. There are many trails that you can venture on across the rim or even down into the canyon. Just remember that wherever you go down, youll need to hike back up. Take a water bottle in any case. Youll need your camera and plenty of film or disk space on your new digital camera. The drive back from the north Rim is spectacular, as youll be treated to views of the Grand Staircase. Vermilion Cliffs, White Cliffs and Pink Cliffs will be visible in the distance, each one stair-stepping up and above the other.



Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce is just an hour to the North. At the gate you will be given a map of the park. Just past the main gate you can stop at the visitor center and view the various displays on the geology and other information about the park. Drive to some of the overlooks. The main road in Bryce Canyon goes from the Gate on the North for 20 miles to the South end of the park. There are many places to stop and take photos in Bryce Canyon National Park. If you enjoy walking then there are many trails that lead from the top of the park down in and among the formations. Use the map given you at the gate. As you stop at the overlooks you will be looking to the East into the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and across the Bryce Valley toward Powell Point which rises to over 10,000 feet. Depending on the season you can enjoy many activities near the park such as rodeos, chuck wagon rides and entertainment, horseback riding, helicopter rides, etc. If you have time you can go further venture past Bryce Canyon to Kodachrome Basin State Park for the afternoon. This is a magical place with unique formations. There are also opportunities to see wildlife at the Bryce Canyon Animal Safari (www.brycecanyonanimalsafari.com) Call ahead for reservations.


Panguitch Lake / Cedar Breaks National Monument / Duck Creek

Circle north again to the quaint town of Panguitch (just 40 minutes away) and then go south and climb the mountain on a beautifully paved road to Panguitch Lake (the word Panguitch means "Big Fish"). Here you can rent boats and gear for fishing or bring your own. There are stores and restaurants for lunch or dinner and supplies. When you're finished viewing this sparkling large lake in the mountains, continue south and West to Cedar Breaks National Monument. You'll be close to Brian Head Resort if you want to drop down into the town. Here you can rent Mountain Bikes and ride a large network of trails. In summer you can even put your bike on a ski lift to the top of a mountain and ride downhill through the forest.

At Cedar Breaks you can view the formations of the Markagaunt Plateau. It is much like Bryce Canyon. From here you can circle south and then east on highway 14 to see overlooks toward Zion National Park. Youll pass Navajo Lake, which sits like a jewel in a mountain valley. You can take an easy walk to Cascade Falls and see where water seeps from the side of the mountain and literally cascades into the upper Virgin River. The Virgin is the river that has carved Zion National Park. Venture further East on highway 14 and stop at Duck Creek Village. From here circle back to us just 40 minutes for a relaxing evening.


East Side of Zion Walks / Hikes / Rappelling

The East side of Zion National Park offers some excellent short walks, day or full day hikes and several excellent technical hikes that include rappelling in slot canyon areas.

Walks to the Blind Arch Overlook and around Checkerboard Mesa are easily accessible and there are many pull-outs throughout Zion National Park where you can easily venture off for a short walk in a side canyon. In all areas use good judgment and caution about where you walk or hike.

The Blind Arch Overlook walk begins on the east side of the road at the top of the main tunnel. This walk offers views into the Pine Creek area which is adjacent to the tunnel and then takes you out to an overlook into the main Zion basin. The view is spectacular and the walk will take between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on how much time you spend shooting photos, viewing foliage and enjoying the scenic overlook.

The Checkerboard walk goes around to the back of the mesa and begins and ends at the parking lot just to the North of the mesa. This walk is slightly strenuous and will take approximately 1 hours depending on your ability.

Technical Hikes with Rappels:
This includes hikes to places such as the Zion Narrows, Orderville Canyon, Englestead Canyon, Mystery Canyon, Spry Canyon, Keyhole Canyon, Pine Creek and Fat Mans Misery. Lake powell

Lake Powell is an easy day trip from Zion Mountain Ranch. From Zion Mountain Ranch the drive to Lake powell is just 100 minutes. Go east from Zion Mountain Ranch (10 miles) to Mt. Carmel Junction and then turn south (20 miles to Kanab). Go through Kanab and follow the signs that lead east to Page / Lake Powell. You will travel east (70 miles) to the Wahweap Marina. Most of Lake Powell is in the state of Utah but the very southern end (Glen Canyon Dam) is just over the border in Arizona. Perhaps the easiest way to experience Lake Powell is to take a guided day cruise on the lake. The most popular tour is one that takes you to Rainbow Bridge (the world's largest natural stone bridge). There's really no reason for the built in jack not to fit properly into a USB port, but iriver provides a short cable in case you run into problems.
