But when it came to bad news, it was hard to beat General Motors Corp. GM not only saw sales slide 26% in July, but it also reported its third-worst earnings in history, losing $15.5 billion in the second quarter.
Overall, it was the eighth straight month of sales declines for the worlds automakers. Although weak sales figures have become commonplace, industry analyst George Magliano at forecasting firm Global Insight contended that it was not simply more of the same,because July is traditionally one of the strongest selling months for the industry, and carmakers have been offering huge incentives in hopes of boosting sales.
July was absolutely horrendous, Magliano said.
Sales of fuel-efficient passenger cars up 0.3% industrywide in July benefited a select few. Nissan Motor Co. was up a surprising 8.5%. Kia Motors Corp. and Subaru both reported gains above 5%.
Honda Motor Co., which has been strong for most of the year, saw a 1.6% setback in July, which it blamed in part on the fact it did not have enough inventory of small cars such as the Civic to meet demand.
As in recent months, most carmakers pointed a finger at high gas prices, slumping consumer confidence and weakness in pickup and SUV sales, coupled with shortages of small cars.
With Julys report they added tighter credit to the list, saying that tens of thousands of customers who would have been eligible for financing a year ago are being turned away today because lenders are being more cautious.
Another new wrinkle:Automakers are taking huge losses when selling large vehicles coming off leases.
GM said Friday that it took a $1.3-billion write-down associated with leasing losses at GMAC, the automakers 49%-held financing arm. The auto and mortgage lender on Thursday reported a $2.5-billion loss in the second quarter as residual values for leased SUVs and trucks plummeted.
And although GM said it would stay in the leasing business, it said it would significantly cut back such financing and raise lease prices, moves also announced by Ford this week. Chrysler said it would get out of leasing altogether.
Brian Allan, general manager of Galpin Motors in North Hills, said he kept dealerships open until after midnight Thursday to offer the last low-cost leases on Jaguars, Volvos and Lincolns to customers rushing to get in before the window closed. We leased 12 Jags last night when normally we only do two per day, he said.
Japanese carmakers, which have been punished less for their reliance on leasing thanks to relatively high residual values for their vehicles, stood pat.
We remain committed to leasing as a valuable part of our business, said Bob Carter, general manager of U.S. sales for Toyota, adding that 16% of Toyota brand sales and well above 30% of Lexus brand sales are on leases.
That kind of confidence was absent in discussions about the immediate future of the industry. Ford predicted that U.S. sales industrywide for the year could drop below 14.2 million vehicles, compared with 16.1 million in 2007. Toyota put the number at 14.5 million. Through July, sales are off 10.5% from last year, with only 8.55 million vehicles sold.
Analysts feared that 2009 could be worse than 2008, as the still-unwinding housing crunch keeps consumers feeling poor and businesses unable to buy the full-size pickups most of the industry depends on for profits.
Carmakers have reacted by cutting production of trucks and SUVs, shedding employees, closing plants and beefing up output of small cars.
GM estimated that, on an annualized basis, as many as 300,000 sales are being lost because of shortages of popular models. Toyota said it had less than a 10-day supply on several models, including a 1.5-day inventory of its Prius hybrid. Last month, Toyota said it would begin producing the Prius in the U.S. to help meet demand.
A Honda dealership in downtown Los Angeles had only one Civic hybrid on the lot this week, and a salesman was asking $3,000 over the sticker price.
The same night, a Chevrolet dealer in Glendale was brimming with Trailblazer SUVs and Silverado pickups, but devoid of customers.
That has been the story for GM, which has seen year-to-date sales slide by 18% and losses through the first six months total $18.8 billion.
Including the GMAC write-off, GMs second-quarter charges totaled $9.1 billion, with more than $6 billion tied to worker buyouts and liabilities associated with its former parts division, Delphi Corp., as well as a $197-million charge related to a strike at a supplier.
Clearly, it was a kitchen-sink quarter for GM, said analyst Mark Warnsman of Calyon Securities, referring to the companys apparent desire to get all the bad news out at once. But theyve had them in the past, and the kitchen sink keeps coming back.
Excluding the one-time items, GM had a loss for the quarter of $6.3 billion, or $11.21 a share. Analysts had forecast a loss of $2.62 a share. A year earlier, GM posted a profit of $891 million, or $1.56 a share.
GM said revenue slid 18% to $38.2 billion in the quarter. GM shares fell 84 cents, or 7.6%, to $10.23.

I lost $1,636.15 today, marking my second largest losing day ever (the largest loss is detailed in the first post of this blog).
The majority (~$1,500) of it was lost in 30/60 HL Stud.

I basically never scooped a big pot, when someone would donk call down with a trash hand(example below), never hit my draws for half, and pretty much got screwed in every way possible. I guess I won't be back at the 10/20 or 30/60 tables soon. Surprisingly, the players at 30/60 are quite bad, but they are aggressive causing high variance.

I withdrew about $5k and left about $2k to play with. I don't need this kind of aggrevation of high limit poker. I also don't need an extra $3k a month from grinding, so I begin to question why the hell I am basically wasting all my free time away from work playing poker.

In fact this idiot tarcards won a bunch of pots with idiotic hands and screwed me over about 4 times on both tables. He was not the only one, I couldn't win vs. any of them.

Its been almost a week since my surgery and Im finally starting to get somewhat back to normal. The good news is that my doctor was right when he said I should expect to be walking within a couple days. He was totally wrong about my ability to get back to work though. I can still barely sit up for a couple hours before my knee starts to swell and become really annoying.
The surgery itself went swimmingly. Though there were some annoyances at the hospital (such as having the IV put in my hand instead of my arm), it wasnt a bad experience. I managed to get home without incident. Something strange happened when I was walking back in to my building though. A doctor that was moving in to the building saw me, took one look at my bandage and knew the doctor that had performed the surgery. Turns out he was a Fellow for my doctor last year; he could tell my surgeon just by the way he wrapped my knee after the surgery. Crazy. And New York is how big?
The procedure itself turned out to be different than expected. I definitely had a bonespur that needed to be shaved off from the screw holding my new ACL in place; but my doctor was convinced my meniscus repair from the first surgery didnt work and I was going to need to have it removed. Once he got in there, he realized that the meniscus repair was fine, but I somehow managed to tear my meniscus again. Thats right, between the first surgery (seven months ago, to be exact) and now. That explains the constant knee pain Ive had since February (which is probably when I tore it).
The past week has gone by painfully slowly. I havent been able to concentrate enough to get anything useful done. Ive just been laying around watching the same movies over and over again. That and playing GTA IV; but at this point, I have to admit, Im starting to get tired of picking up hookers and killing them. Who knew that day would ever come.

I have always believed in being honest. I dont lie to other people. For me, even worse than lying to other people, is lying to yourself. In poker you have to be realistic about your own ability. Sure at the table you can lie. Its all part of the game. Maybe one of the reasons I love the game is because I can lie at the table and not feel bad about it.  But I dont lie to myself about my ability. If you are not realistic about your ablilty you are a danger to yourself and your bankroll.
I dont know how many times I have heard someone say you gotta be confident, if youre not confident youre going to lose. Look at Phil Hellmuth. Hes confident. So are all the top players. Youve got no chance if youre not confident.  Lets look at this from a different angle. How many truly awful players have you seen who are convinced theyre tremendous players and are bursting with confidence? How many losers have you seen who are convinced that theyre just having a run of bad luck? How many DAG (dumb and aggressive) players have you seen at the table convinced theyre the new Gus Hansen? They go through hundreds, even thousands, in just one night. They have a pile of chips which is roughly worth about a tenth of what they paid to get them. They then proceed to tell people how to play. In fact how many poker players have you met who are convinced they are great, or at least very good? The answer is, just about all of them. Some of them are average, some of them are good or very good, a few of them are great, but most of them are awful.
So you have a handful of great players who are super confident, and hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of truly godawful players who are equally as confident. I think you can see the difference. The reason the great players are confident is simply because they have every right to be. Their confidence is based on results. You also have a ton of players who have absolutely no right to be confident at all. In fact they should be just the opposite. What they need is to be honest with themselves. They need to realise how much they need to improve to win. The more realistic people are about their ability, the more chance they have to improve. Confidence should be based on results, not self delusion.
I have seen really young players at the table with a ton of chips. They seem to know a lot about the game, and play with a freedom, that only players who havent experienced the downside of the game, can play. They talk to one another about all their finals tables. They love the game. They live and breathe it. Everything they do seems to earn them chips. They make it look so easy, but six months later they are gone. One ot two may move up in level. but I have rarely seen any of them on tv. Most just disappear, never to return. Why?
First of all, the game is never easy, even for the very best players. Some of the rookie players start with a lot of money or make a lot of money very quickly. For some, the game may seem easy, or be easy for a time. But after this, the cold reality of the game will hit home. Once the luck starts to even out, and these players experience the sort of run you and I know is inevitable, then you will see how good these new players really are. Some will make it. Some learn very quickly about the nature of the game. They will be able to play through the despair and desperation that continually going in with the best of it, but losing will bring. If they can get through that the first time it happens, they are in with a real chance. It is one of the biggest hurdles in any poker players career. Anyone who cant play through this is unlikely to make it big.
I cant. I just cant take it. I know I cant, and I have been honest with myself, and I shall be honest with you in saying I cant. But I can handle it, and that is something different. What I mean by this is, that once things start going bad, I drop down to the lowest levels possible, and start to play very infrequently. This way I protect my bankroll and my sanity. It also means I continue to play poker. Everyone has to deal with it in their own way. I have adapted my poker game to my character, and this is the way I deal with the down side of the game. It means I keep playing because even in the worst years and worst luck, I dont do enough damage to myself psychologically or to my bankroll,  that I can no longer play the game. It also means I am a winner in the long run. It means I will not be a big winner in the long run, but I will, at least, be a winner. It is my way of dealing with the downside. You have to find some way of dealing with it. My advice, for what its worth, is know that running bad is coming, and prepare yourself enough to know how youre going to deal with it, when it hits. I also know enough about the game, to know how much better the top players are. I am realistic about my ability, so I play at a level where I can win a little rather than lose a lot.
One of the most annoying and gut wrenching things when youre running bad, is to see some idiot at the table doing everything wrong and making a boat load of chips. They seem to go in behind on every hand, and yet still win. You start to say to yourself, well maybe if I played like that But this can be very deceptive. This is losing poker. It is so tempting, but dont forget were talking in the long term. Players do get very lucky in the short term. It is part of the game. Thats why good players make money. Thats why you see old and very experienced players still making money at the game. They make money out of people who have this get rich quick attitude. Because for every young hopeful who makes it to a finals table playing like he or she can never fold a hand, or never need to, there are a thousand others who have lost their money very quickly playing like this.
I dont blame anyone who knows they are a really crap player, but wants to make it big, for playing like this. Be honest with yourself here too. If you cant play well, it seems your best hope is to realise this, and play the game like bingo. Throw it all in when behind in a big tourney, suck out a few times, and youre at a finals table. The great thing about the game as it is now is, you may never need to win at the game again. There are sponsors out there who are willing to pay high profile players according to how silly their hat is. Dont forget the sponsors dont care whether you win or not in the long term, they just care about how much tv time you get. This means you could be a truly average, or even very bad, losing player, but still win at poker, because of the money you are picking up from sponsors. As long as you have a gimmick, or wear silly clothes you have a real chance of being an overall winner in a game youre lousy at. Yes, its an expensive long shot. Youll probably lose, but the main thing is to know what you are trying to do and why.
But if you see players continually going in behind and sucking out, try and work out how much they have to spend on playing this way. Think about how many times you have gone in with all your chips as hot favourite. Now think of the times you have lost. Now think of the times you will lose as a big underdog. Frightening isnt it? If it isnt, it should be. Fear is in our psychological makeup for a very good reason. It protects us. It tries to curb our more adventurous and dangerous inclinations. This is present to protect the human race. Just as you need some adventurous spirit, you need some fear and respect for certain situations too. This is an inherent way of protecting you. It doesnt mean you have to play frightened, but you have to use common sense. Use all your skills as a player to try and win. You do this by outplaying your opponent. This really doesnt have to be complicated. You dont need to think at the 3rd or 4th level here. Sometimes it can just be as simple as going in as 70 per cent favourite against your opponents 30 per cent. If you have done this, you have outplayed them.
If youre not very good at the game and know it, but still want to enjoy playing then thats fine too. Just accept that youre not very good and youre playing poker as a hobby. Hobbies cost money. But I think if you accept this, it will cost you less money and heartbreak in the long run. In fact, be realistic at whatever level you play. Most of the class players are always talking about how difficult the game is to master. Theres always something to learn. Accept this, be realistic about your ability, and you may end up learning a lot about the game, and be a better player for it.

Remember The cycle is continuous, so don’t put pressure on yourself to make a certain amount in one night or think that “I have to win a hand in the next half an hour”. Instead just let the cards do there job, you do yours, which is play solid poker, and let everything else flow into action. If you begin to think objectively about every situation (this can be done by taking a third person view of the hand and analyzing the situation objectively without any emotions), suppress your emotions at the table and understand that the game is continuous and there is plenty of time left for you to make money from your opponents.
